It's "the largest art museum in America south of Chicago, west of Washington, D.C., and east of Los Angeles," which is to say that it's the largest museum for the yokels in the fly-over states. Regardless, MFAH is a very large, well-regarded museum with the kind of power and money to keep it that way. There are two buildings with a healthy balance of old and new; a movie theater that shows art-house fare and the occasional fun festival of shorts or award-winning commercials; a modest sculpture garden -- a mere dabbling compared to the Nasher in Dallas or the Umlauf in Austin; the Glassel School of Art for serious artists and dabblers; and events, parties and lectures.
