Mission Statement

BOX 13 ArtSpace is an artist run nonprofit innovative environment for the creation and advancement of experimental contemporary art in Houston. BOX 13 artists create this environment through the offering of affordable workspaces for emerging and established artists, dedicating two interior spaces to the exhibtion of artistic explorations, a window gallery for installations and an outdoor performance exhibition space. BOX 13 promotes dialogue among artists and the art community on current trends affecting the arts.

This East End artist-run collaborative isn’t in it for the money. It's one of a handful of spaces popping up designed to give artists an opportunity to show non-commercial, experimental work that “pushes the boundaries,” as cofounder Whitney Riley says. Box 13’s 1940s building includes studio space for collaborative members and five “boxes,” or exhibition spaces. Put Box 13’s receptions, typically held every six weeks or so, on your calendar, because during the remainder of exhibition runs you have to e-mail e_bradford@yahoo.com for a viewing appointment.
