Mission Statement

The mission of the Houston Symphony is to inspire and enrich the lives of our diverse citizenry through outstanding symphonic music performed by our great orchestra.

Review

The Houston Symphony is the city's premiere classical-music performing group. As its target audience -- let's face it, old rich people, you like the symphony more than anyone else does -- is less able to sustain any symphony's traditional mission to keep classical music inscrutable and technical, it has begun to adapt. Fewer "Beethoven Symphony no. 4, op. 6, suite 35a, in E-sharp major featuring violinist Ingrid Blahblah," more celebrity vocalists -- the hippest that list gets is Ben Folds, but also includes Peter Cetera (who might be hipper than Ben Folds), Gloria Gaynor, Clay Aiken; and more themed performances -- Video Games Live!, music from Star Wars, music from Lord of the Rings. Tickets generally start around $30 for terrible seats and increase quickly.
