Mission Statement

The Menil Collection is a museum dedicated to exhibiting and preserving the art collection of Houston philanthropists John and Dominique de Menil. Its diverse holdings represent many world cultures and thousands of years of human creativity, from prehistoric times to the present day. Assembled over the course of many decades, the collection—which continues to grow—is widely recognized for its depth and eclecticism. At the Menil visitors view art in a tranquil, contemplative setting.

Review

Houstonians don't have a lot to brag about to cultured types from New York, but our museums just happen to kick ass and even cultured types from New York know it. The Menil Collection is the crown jewel of our ever-growing art world, with highly respected permanent collections and high-profile traveling exhibitions that are in keeping with founder Dominique de Menil's flawless eye for art. Inside the architecturally significant building is an enveloping, contemplative space where floor boards creak underneath feet and visitors speak in whispered tones. Outside is an elegant green space where Montrose bohemians congregate to picnic, play music, and sunbathe. The Menil's concern also includes the Rothko Chapel, the Cy Twombly Gallery, the Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum, and the zany Dan Flavin installation. On a not-too-hot day, everything is well within comfortable walking distance.

Offerings

The Menil Library is a non-circulating research collection open to the public, 1-3 p.m. Wednesday-Friday.
