The Alley Theatre's Toxic Avenger may be headed to Broadway

The Alley Theatre’s upcoming production of The Toxic Avenger may be headed to Broadway following its Houston run set for Jan. 20-Feb. 12 at the Alley.

Playbill Online reports today that the show’s co-author Joe DiPietro, co-author of the Tony-winning Memphis, is looking into the prospect of taking the Alley’s production to Broadway following its run here.

The tongue-in-cheek rock musical, based on the 1985 sci-fi cult flick, already drew favorable reviews from New York critics during its 2009 off-Broadway run of more than 300 performances. Its original director (and former Houstonian) John Rando, who won a Tony directing Urinetown, will be at the helm for the Alley’s staging — so it seems perfectly logical that Rando and the show’s creative team are speculating that there’s still more New York life left in the popular show. Toxic Avenger features music by DiPietro’s Memphis collaborator David Bryan.

DiPietro’s jocular explanation to Playbill noted that with the Big Apple beleaguered of late by earthquakes, hurricanes and heat waves, Broadway probably needs the show’s titular superhero more than ever.

PERHAPS IT WILL BE MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN THE ALLEY’S LAST BROADWAY FIASCO, WONDERLAND!
