    • Sue Grafton, author of the Alphabet Series of mystery novels, will be in Houston tonight at Murder By The Book to read from her latest book starring protagonist detective Kinsey Millhone, U is for Undertow. She'll be signing copies of the book, which went on sale last week, at 6:30 p.m.
    • Houston's been inundated with cookbook writers, too. Saturday, popular blogger The Pioneer Woman a.k.a Ree Drummond, appeared at Blue Willow Bookshop to promote copies of her first cookbook, Pioneer Woman Cooks. She's the creator of one of my favorite pork recipes. Houston blogger Taryn Peine sums up Drummond's appearance on her blog.
    • Tomorrow at 7 p.m. British cooking show sensation Nigella Lawson will also speak at Blue Willow to promote her latest cookbook, Nigella Christmas. Ree Drummond's appearance was packed, so if you want to see Lawson be sure to get there early.
    • Leipzig, Germany, is a sister city of Houston, and the town's university is one of the oldest in Europe. It's also the basis for an ongoing exhibit at the Central Library downtown, called In Pursuit of Knowledge: 600 Years of Leipzig University. Spanning six decades of research from the university founded in 1409, the exhibit features everything from pages of the world's oldest Bible to the earliest book to mention the continent called "America" (from 1507). The exhibit closes January 8. Admission is free. On December 14 at noon the director of the Leipzig University Library will give a personal tour of the exhibit. Call 832-393-1652 to reserve a space.
    • Inprint, Houston's non-profit literary arts organization, has debuted a new holiday e-card by which donations can be made in someone's name to the organization. The cards start at $50 (though there is a "name-your-own-price" option) and each donation is tax-deductible. Proceeds go toward's Inprint's programs, which include free creative writing classes for area teachers and bringing nationally-known authors to Houston for the Margarett Root Brown Reading Series.
    • Speaking of Inprint, this Sunday at 4 p.m. the Inprint Book Club will be discussing The Sea by author John Banville, winner of the Man Booker Prize. The book is about a man undergoing an end-of-life crisis who copes by remembering a summer 50 years earlier. Banville won't be reading in Houston until March but the book club will be a good introduction to his work. And if you want to get a head start on the next book, it'll be Texas author Mary Karr's new memoir, Lit. She's reading January 11, and the book club will discuss her book the day before.
    • Underbelly Printing, a screen-printing workshop in San Antonio that focuses on flat-stock and apparel, had a book release party for their first book of prints, Part Myth, Saturday at the Johanna near the Menil campus. You can see copies of the book-in-progress on their Flickr page or order a copy for yourself on their website.
