It's a bit of a sentimental pisser: Barnes & Noble has decided to shutter its Bookstop at 2922 South Shepherd on Sept. 15. A new and larger (read: typical) store will open the following day in the River Oaks Shopping Center on West Gray.
The Bookstop: Jessica Kourkounis for the Chronicle
According to this story on Chron.com Weingarten Realty Investors claims there are no plans to bulldoze the historic art deco building, the former home of the Alabama Theater. But a new tenant has not yet been lined up.
:(
SIIIIIIIIIIGH.
Weingarten=Voldemort.
Ha! So true!
But I did run into Steve Weingarten at a viewing at the River Oaks Theatre, so there must be branches of good somewhere in the family tree.
Bud Daily, longtime owner of Cactus Records, used to be a good customer of mine. He would tell you that technology (down loadable music files and internet shopping) was the real killer of the old shops over there.
Video killed the radio star, and so forth.
sentimental pisser says it all
I'm very sad to say goodbye to the Bookstop. It was one of the first places I discovered when I moved to Houston. It has always been my primary bookstore even though I don't live near it. Now I have to find someplace new.
damn. :(
what is up with houston wanting to get rid of all these historic sites :(
Hmm, Interesting how things change and time marches on. I was mad when Bookstop replaced the Alabama theater. At least bookstop kept the shape of the old theater. I could still go inside and remember to long ago days and seeing The Rocky Horror Picture show there on Friday and Saturday night
