DiverseWorks' Diane Barber stepping down; artist William Betts to be interim executive director

DiverseWorks co-executive director and visual arts curator Diane Barber is stepping down effective Sept. 30. In a leadership shuffle, artist and board member William Betts has been named interim executive director, and Sixto Wagan -- until now co-executive director and performing arts curator -- is now artistic director.

From the release announcing the shakeup:

In 2006, Lawndale Art Center engaged Betts in a similar interim Executive Director role. Betts implemented the artist residency program, assisted Lawndale Arts Center in their first successful National Endowment for the Arts and Warhol Foundation grants, and coordinated the search for a permanent Executive Director.

Barber is leaving to pursue independent curatorial projects but will continue to curate occasional visual arts shows, including the upcoming group show State Fair, slated to open Sept. 9.

I wonder what the REAL story is here? William Betts is a "take no prisoners" person, so I think this probably has a lot to do with Diverse Works monetary situation and the push for a new collaborative space in Midtown. Look for some major shake-ups (long needed) at DW.
