Fela!, the Tony-winning musical based on the life and music of the legendary Nigerian musician and political activist Fela Kuti, will make its Houston debut June 5-10, when Society for the Performing Arts presents the touring production at Jones Hall.
Kuti (1938-97) was a pioneer of Afrobeat music who used his music to defy the corrupt and oppressive military regimes running his native Nigeria — igniting a generation to protest and political action.
The ground-breaking production was masterminded by famed modern dance figure Bill T. Jones, who directed, choreographed and co-wrote the book with Jim Lewis.
Following a critically acclaimed run off-Broadway, Fela! moved to Broadway’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre, where it played until January 2011. Nominated for 11 Tonys, Fela! won three, including one for Jones’ choreography — his second, following his 2007 win for choreographing Spring Awakening.
Ticket prices are $30-$80. Information is available at spahouston.org and by phone at 713-227-4772.
