Three Houston theater groups teaming up in a new space

Classical Theatre Company, Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company and Stark Naked Theatre are teaming up to share a performance space at Spring Street Studios.

Like several other mid-sized and small theater groups, the three so far have functioned as nomadic companies, performing in various spaces around town.

Beginning with Stark Naked’s Dinner with Friends, playing Feb. 23-March 11, the companies will alternate productions in the space they are renaming Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, formerly Divergence Music & Arts.

The next shows of the other two groups, however, will play at other venues as previously announced: Classical Theatre’s Uncle Vanya, playing Friday through Jan. 22 at Talento Bilingue; and Mildred’s Umbrella’s Dead Man’s Cell Phone, playing March 8-24 at Barnevelder Movement Arts Complex. Both companies will be staging their productions in the new venue by summer.

While the new arrangement will enable the companies to share a continuing home base, as well as certain administrative duties of the arrangement, each will maintain its separate identity and programming philosophy.

This is good news. For the last few years there has been a severe shortage of venues for the smaller theater troupes. This makes a lot of sense. I wish you all huge success!
