American Idol finalist Constantine Maroulis, a 2009 Tony nominee for his starring role in Broadway’s Rock of Ages, will star in the Alley Theatre’s The Toxic Avenger, Jan. 13-Feb. 12.

As previously announced, Tony-winning director John Rando (Urinetown) will direct the Alley production, as he directed Toxic Avenger’s well-received 2009 off-Broadway run. The Alley mounting is regarded as a tryout for taking the show directly to Broadway later this season.

The Alley cast also features Broadway veterans Mara Davi and Nancy Opel, a Tony nominee for Urinetown.

Tony-winning Memphis creators Joe Di Pietro and David Bryan wrote the musical based on the 1985 cult flick about a man who becomes a superhero after being dumped in a barrel of toxic waste. They have written new numbers for the Alley run.

Ticket information is at 713-220-5700 or alleytheatre.org.
