Some nights an unremarkable neighborhood sports bar, other nights a purely unpretentious place to catch an Astros’ game, Griff’s is the comfortable-if-dingy home for sports in Montrose. Griff’s wins points for being more group-friendly than better bars like Ernie’s or T.K. Bitterman’s, with no shortage of tables and one of the better patios in the neighborhood. The bar, however, is the worst seat in the house, unless you’re a rugby player: on a steady night, getting a drink is not dissimilar from being in a scrum. The crowd is mostly mid-to-late twenties, though more than a few old-guard regulars help maintain some historical perspective.
Aside from the cold beers and awesome food (the Friday special of blackened catfish is a great deal for those dining on the cheap), Mr. Griff himself has been running for office for over 20 years. He never gets elected but that doesn't stop him and his campaign staff from putting hundreds of signs all over the Montrose every election season. Griff's is also known for its party bus -- an old school bus stripped down to bare seats and crude paint job that can be rented to transport yourself and a few dozen buddies to an Astros or Rockets game in trailer-trash style.
Happy Hour Specials: Monday - Friday: 3 p.m. - 7 p.m.
