Easily the most unrepentantly grown-up bar in Midtown and high in the running for the citywide title, Leon’s is white-hot lounging, pure and simple. Now under the same ownership as Upper Kirby’s yuppie-friendly Mugsy’s, Leon’s offers solid pours, a great cross-section of booze (though the unfortunate absence of brandy seems suspicious), and the luscious Twilight Room, where you’ll find a piano and an ambiance like something that could’ve come from a bar in a collaboration between Howard Hawks and David Lynch. A game room in the back keeps louder competitions from disrupting the rest of the bar, and the smoking patio is actually in the alley – an attribute most patrons will either find groovy or Unforgivable. Midtown and Montrose send their prowling yupsters to invade the bar on the weekends, but being inundated by polo shirts and sandals is a small price to pay for an establishment of Leon’s ilk.
