Houston on the cheap: Stag's Head

Stuck in town and seeking a place to hunker down until the traffic lightens up? Look no further than the Stag’s Head, a proper pub nestled between Shepherd and Greenbriar, just north of U.S. 59. Stag’s Head is a post-work respite featuring a lengthy happy hour that invites customers to settle in for as long as necessary.

The breezy patio is perfect for spring and summer weather, while the plump booths in the dimly lit bar are nice for those days when work took a toll. Drafts are discounted a dollar during happy hour, which should provide plenty of incentive to sidle up to the bar and strike up a conversation with the pleasant staff. There’s always a fine selection of brews, including plenty of local options, and the bartenders are more than happy to help you select something.

In addition to the draft specials, well drinks and house wines are a dollar cheaper during happy hour. Stag’s Head also offers a couple of beer-and-shot pairings: the “Texacan” is tequila alongside a Lone Star, while the “Irish Redneck” pairs up Jameson and PBR. Add in the daily food specials or something else from the traditional pub menu and it’s easy to turn happy hour into suppertime as well.

There’s an additional bonus to dropping by, though it may come at the peril of your pocketbook. Stag’s Head is across the street from Cactus Music, and it’s all too tempting to saunter over and dig through the records. As Tom Haverford of the Pawnee Parks Department would say, “treat yo self!” After all, happy hours are meant for just that — whether it means enjoying another excellent brew or spending the extra cash in those pockets on some other indulgence.
