Movie-related events this week

He peed on the Dude's rug.He peed on the Dude's rug.• Cinema Arts Festival Houston at various locations
Tilda Swinton is the main draw for this five-day festival celebrating Houston’s film and arts community. Expect live music and film performances, outdoor events, the H Box (which we got a chance to experience at our mod Happy Hour on Monday at Bookst .. uh, Alabama Theatre) and the premiere of Laura Harrison's documentary "Ant Farm 1969 - 1971: Early Underground Adventures with Space, Land and Time.”

They’ll even show a free Friday screening of The Red Shoes which, if you’re like me, you only know of because of the script in A Chorus Line (“See, I never heard about "The Red Shoes," I never saw "The Red Shoes," I don't give a shit about "The Red Shoes”).

Various locations. Check for events here.

Lucky Strike, Houston’s entry into posh bowling, is hosting this shindig and it’s only a few blocks away from the main event. The bowling alley will host a happy hour from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m., with special drink pricing on Caucasians and Saint Arnold. The Dude abides.

    • 2009 Houston Lebowski Bash at Discovery Green
Join the cult of The Dude. If you’ve kicked back a few Caucasians, maybe you’ll have the nerve to enter the costume contest or participate in human bowling (yeah “human” … I didn’t stutter). There will also be a trivia contest, live music and a screening of “The Big Lebowski”. The movie screening is free and starts around 10 p.m. on the hill.

If you can get over the fact that it's about ballerinas, The Red Shoes is actually pretty fantastic. It's Martin Scorsese's favorite movie, and you can clearly see him paying homage to it in the trailer for Shutter Island. The brief shot where DiCaprio is frantically descending a spiral staircase is lifted directly from The Red Shoes.
