The Movie Roundup: Big bugs at River Oaks, My Cousin Vinay?

Big Bugs invade Landmark River Oaks Theater on Friday: FileBig Bugs invade Landmark River Oaks Theater on Friday: File

What up, movie buffs? Yearning for that silver screen scoop? I am here to appease you.
Proof that the entire planet deserves to be decimated in a fiery holocaust: there’s a sequel to White Chicks in the works. God help us. For reals?: FileFor reals?: File

At this weekend’s box office, the critically lauded District 9 totally destroyed G.I Joe, The Time Traveler’s Wife, Julie and Julia and…what the hell? What is G-Force still doing in the Top 5?

Watch lovable scamp Eliza Doolittle finally master those hard “A”s during the first night of Miller Outdoor Theater’s 3 Nights of Movie Musicals, starting with My Fair Lady on Tuesday, The Music Man on Wednesday and capping off with a sing-along to last year’s Mamma Mia on Thursday. The best part? It’s free! All together now: the rain in Spain…

Matthew Vaughn’s action-comedy comic adaptation Kick-Ass did just that at Comic-Con; now Lionsgate’s nabbed the distribution rights.

X-Men Origins: wolverine blah: FileX-Men Origins: wolverine blah: FileNerd worlds will collide when Bryan Singer, director of the first two X-Men flicks and Superman Returns, directs the Battlestar Galactica feature. This news leads me to believe that the X-Men film franchise will remain irrevocably broken.

Woah. That said, however, Christopher McQuarrie, writer of the superb Usual Suspects and the first X-Men pic, has signed on to write the sequel to the utterly atrocious and nonsensical X-Men Origins: Wolverine. So…this one might make sense? Maybe?

Aurora Picture Show is showing All in a Day’s Work, a collection of short documentaries from doxita, a traveling festival of documentaries under 40 minutes long. The price is simply “donate what you can,” so “I’m broke” is no longer a valid excuse for missing out on your daily dose of culture.

Screen Gems starts filming on the remake of Sam Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs today. James Woods, James Marsden and Kate Bosworth will star. If you fell asleep at the word “remake,” you’re not alone. Or at the words “Kate Bosworth,” for that matter.

Sony’s not about to let their cash cow run away. They’ve already
got a screenwriter lined up for Spider-Man 5 and 6; no word yet on Sam, Tobey and Kirsten. As long as the scripts don’t include Emo Peter Parker and his douchey dance scene, I don’t see how they can be any worse than the third flick.

If Jake Busey’s creepy-ass death grin doesn’t deter you, come check out the midnight screening of Starship Troopers this Friday and Saturday at the River Oaks, sponsored by 29-95 and Movies! The Store. You know you love you some Paul Verhoeven!...Right? Right, guys?

EW’s got a great list of the 20 most anticipated movies this fall. OMG, 9! Shutter Island! Zombieland! AVATAR! AVATAR! AVATAR! And a bunch of other movies that aren’t horror or sci-fi, too.

Speaking of Avatar , as I tend to do, the first official pic is up! Why hello, Sam Worthington. That is one studly avatar you’ve got there.MST3K does Plan 9MST3K does Plan 9

Two things I love? Ed Wood (well, mostly as played by Johnny Depp) and Mystery Science Theater 3000. The stars from MST3K, Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bell Corbett, are broadcasting their snarky commentary to the worst movie evs, Wood’s Plan 9 from Outer Space, live into theaters throughout the country this Thursday night, including AMC Willowbrook here in Houston. Check it, yo.

This news brought the LOLZ: a Bollywood remake of My Cousin Vinny! PLEASE go to that link and check out the Indian version of Joe Pesci. Just eerie. Dudes, I wonder if it will win the Oscar for best Bollywood film?!

Well, that should do it for now. As always, if you’ve got the drop on some film happenings in Houston, don’t hold out on a sister! Send me an e-mail at maborders@gmail.com.

Not only do they want to remake a Wayans Bros. movie, but they pickone of the crappiest of ... well, all of their movies are pretty shitty.
    Never mind.

And I can't wait for Starship Troopers! I love Paul Verhoeven. I try to forget about Showgirls.

My Cousin Vinay=hah! You're a funny lady, Miz Scott.

I watched Mamma Mia for the first time this weekend. It is really bad. Like, astronomically bad. I was amazed.

The BSG retread makes no sense to me. What is the point? The original BSG was bad, the recent BSG is too sacred to be touched so soon, so what does that leave Singer?

Also: My abhorrance for Kiki Dunst kept me away from Spider-Man 2 and 3 (srsly, she RHYMES at the end of the first one. I nearly had an asthma attack in the theatre from trying to hold in my laughter), and though I had oft heard tale of Emo Peter Parker, I'd never seen him in action. WOW. AMAZING.

Meredith, from a professional comic nerd, you're asking A LOT if you're looking for anything that happened after X Men 2 to make any sense. See, what they don't tell you is that they don't actually read the source material to write the movies now. They use something like those magnetic poetry kits where you just plug words and names in random places.

Hah, riiiight? Emma Frost in Wolverine and Phoenix in The Last Stand were both enough to make me wave my tiny fists of fury in the air, yelling obscenities at the screen. WHY MUST YOU RUIN MY FAVORITE HARD-ASS LADIES, HOLLYWOOD?

    Oz Longworth Jr. Thu, 08/20/2009 - 10:34pm

I agree that it was a magnificent waste of the Emma Frost. After everything Joss Whedon went through to make her a likeable wench in Astonishing X Men, the Wolverine movie pissed it away for the mainstream fans. "Hey, I have an idea!!! Let's have Emma block a few bullets...because that's clearly the most awesome thing she's ever done."

I now have a great desire to see the Indian My Cousin Vinny. It could possibly be the key to what's missing in my life. I mean, I've always said the thing that My Cousin Vinny was lacking is long group dance numbers.

I'm disappointed I'm going to miss Starship Troopers. That movie is so awesomely bad. I mean NPH, Casper Van Deen *and* Denise Richards?!? DYNOMITE!

And oh yay, White Girls remake. I actually saw someone seriously post on Facebook that the first one was one of the funniest movies they'd ever seen. I vommed on my shoes.
