The Movie Roundup: Ghostbusters, High Noon, Harry Potter

Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter: DisneyJohnny Depp as the Mad Hatter: Disney

Welcome to my new weekly round-up of all things cinematic! It’s a big week for the film buffs among us in H-town, so let’s get to it, shall we?

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland trailer has finally dropped, and it’s every smidge as spectacularly freaky and ethereal as we all expected. Is it weird that I still find Johnny Depp sexy in this? The fact that his unparalleled hotness can transcend all manner of grotesque make-up is kind of terrifying. I think it’s possible that he’s an alien. Or a robot.

The new Ghostbusters video game, penned by Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramis, has sold 1 million copies in North America. Meanwhile, Sigourney Weaver has stated that she’s not interested in appearing in the upcoming Ghostbusters 3, which makes me weep a little for the death of the timeless romance of Dana and Peter. Don’t forget to check out the original Ghostbusters midnight screening this Friday and Saturday at River Oaks Theatre!

Take a peek at Domy Books’ sweet lineup of FREE films for the next three months! Where else can you watch Let Sleeping Corpses Lie and Paper Moon at the same venue? Be sure to check out Stuck on August 19 — Stuart Gordon wants to kick you in the brain balls and I suggest you just sit back and let him.

    (500) Days of Summer has been getting kudos across the board for its original take on the romantic comedy formula. Since the first time I saw the phenomenal Brick, I’ve known that Joseph Gordon-Levitt has some major chops, and everyone loves Zooey Deschanel, right? Catch (500) Days of Summer at River Oaks Theatre and melt that stone cold heart of yours.

Despite the fact that the words “Jerry Bruckheimer’s first 3D family film” struck my heart with an icy cold terror, G-Force has done the unthinkable and edged Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince out of the top spot at the box office. I guess everyone doesn’t find the concept of highly trained guinea pig spies IN THREE DIMENSIONS to be as appalling as I do. I choose to believe this is all due to Zach Galifianakis. You can jump on the bandwagon and watch G-Forcebasically anywhere in Houston.

So imagine that Jerry Bruckheimer is kind of like Voldemort … not too much of a stretch, right? Stick it to He Who Must Not Be Named by catching an encore screening of the Harry Potter feast at Alamo West Oaks tomorrow night.

Those who attended Comic-Con this year managed to incite my ravenous spite even more than usual when they caught glimpses of Iron-Man 2, Sherlock Holmes, Zombieland, Where The Wild Things Are, Alice in Wonderland, AND OH MY GOD THOSE LUCKY BASTARDS Avatar.

Oh yeah! And Toy Story 3! One day I will visit Comic-Con so help me God!

Get your swagger on and don’t miss a run of westerns showing for free at Menil Park! Aurora Picture Show and the Menil Collection have partnered together to bring some sepia and saloons to your day. This Friday, catch the classic High Noon with Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly.

Lionsgate has given the go-ahead for the 7th installment of the Saw franchise. In other news, DEAR GOD WHEN WILL IT END?

I was already thrilled at the prospect of a horror movie penned by Joss Whedon and directed by Drew Goddard, but these three new posters are so hilarious, I’m completely geeking out now. Cabin in the Woods is going to be oh-so clever.

Okay, kiddos, that wraps it up for now. If you’ve got some juicy scoop about film happenings in Houston, drop me a line at maborders@gmail.com.

I cannot begin to describe how incredibly beautiful the trailer for Alice in Wonderland is. Honestly, I can't think of a better director for that film. And casting Alan Rickman as the Caterpillar? Brilliant.

    Meredith Borders Wed, 07/29/2009 - 9:44am

Agreed, Tracy. Casting Alan Rickman as just about ANYTHING is brilliant.

    Jerry Ochoa Wed, 07/29/2009 - 10:00am

Are you suggesting that Johnny Depp would survive the hot-pocalypse?

    John Hook Wed, 07/29/2009 - 10:02am

Never a Weaver fan, GB3 is better off without her.

    Meredith Borders Wed, 07/29/2009 - 10:15am

I think he would, Jerry. Screw Christian Bale (okay!), I think Johnny Depp should lead the revolution.

    Tracy Scott Wed, 07/29/2009 - 10:36am

He won't just lead it. Johnny Depp IS the Revolution. Or maybe the Solution. Whatever.

    erin Wed, 07/29/2009 - 10:41am

    Viva the Revolution!!

Can Channing Tatum be his under-secretary?

    Meredith Borders Wed, 07/29/2009 - 10:44am

Holy lord, have you seen his new GQ pics?!

Click on the slideshow. That pic of him fixing the truck in the tux and trenchcoat? WANT. NOW.

As much flack as I give the Alamo West Oaks for, well, sucking, I cannot deny that the idea of Pop Rocks on trifle sounds amazing.

Alice In Wonderland looks awesome. Johnny Depp and Tim Burton are a great team. Can't wait.

Have y'all seen the trailer for 9? Another project Tim Burton has his hand in that looks fun.

I'll pass on Stuck. Saw it the other night. Not Gordon's best work. A study of human nature based on a true story? But, it is not even close to what really happened. How is it a study of human nature when it totally changes the reality and does not show what the humans actually did or what really happened to them?

I'm happy that AiW looks as spooky as it does. I would have it no other way.

    Meredith Borders Wed, 07/29/2009 - 12:52pm

A valid point, Fred. I'm sort of a sucker for "she gets hers" kinds of stories, so I was happy with the revised ending.

The more news I hear about GB3, the more my reservations build. It will either be awesome or horrible and I'll wait till I see a trailer before forming an opinion.

I agree, when are they going to end the Saw series? I'm not saying that the later Ft13 or Nightmare... movies had cinematic merit but come on. The first Saw was mediocre at best, the second one was worse (depsite a recommendation that I heard that it was better), and I can only assume they go even further down after that. End it now.

AiW trailer looks really cool but I've only seen it on my phone so it was hard to get the full effect. If anyone can handle it, it's Mr. Burton.

speaking of debuts at the comicon, did you read about alan ball announcing the production of Tru Blood the drink!?!! It will be a blood-orange-flavored soda, not a synthetic blood designed by genius Japanese scientists, and it will not contain vicodin or viagara, as ball joked at the comicon. and also, didn't river oaks close?

    Tracy Scott Thu, 07/30/2009 - 2:01pm

Not only is River Oaks still open, but we're doing midnight movies there. This week ... Ghostbusters!

    poshdeluxe Mon, 08/03/2009 - 11:50am

i am such a sucker for tie-ins like this. HAR HAR HAR. no but seriously.

    Meredith Borders Thu, 07/30/2009 - 1:22pm

That sounds like tasty merchandise. I love blood orange. River Oaks is still gasping on for survival.
