The Movie Roundup: A night filled with creeps, Avatar and lots of free Shat

Welcome back to the weekly movie roundup, where I bring the goods from other blogs to this blog to you!

If you’re looking to fill that endless chasm of sadness now that the 29-95 and Movies! The Store run of midnight movies is nearing a close, check out Night of the Creeps this Friday and Saturday at midnight at the River Oaks. Alien brain parasites and zombies, y’all!

Dude flick Dinner for Schmucks is looking to get a little dude-ier with The Hangover star Zach Galifianakis in talks to join Steve Carell and Paul Rudd in Jay Roach’s bromedy. I hope this means Zach G will get a little street cred back after G-Force.

Marvel’s taking a page out of DC’s (comic) book with the motion comic Spider-Woman, Agent of S.W.O.R.D., available on iTunes. You can check out the trailer here. This will probablyNew motion comic: MarvelNew motion comic: Marvel be quite cool, but I can already tell you, it’s no Wonder Woman.

My gag reflex has been sorely tested with this news: Disney and Robert Zemeckis are planning to remake a 3D version of Yellow Submarine for the big screen, because anything made whimsical and trippy can always be re-made cheesy and bland. Oh, and to further depress/horrify you: Zemeckis will use the same performance capture technology he used to turn beloved actors Tom Hanksand Jim Carreyinto terrifying flesh-colored robots. Beatles fans: revolt!

Woah, this movie sounds kind of amazing. William Shatner stars as a playboy who keeps killing off his lady friends and dresses like a blaxploitation lead in the 1974 “psychological thriller” Impulse, showing for FREE this Thursday at the Alamo Drafthouse’s Cult Thursdays. Aww, Shat, you really know how to make ‘em, don’t you?

The trailer is out: 20th Century FoxThe trailer is out: 20th Century FoxAfter years of teasing fanpersons with snippets of ambiguous, vaguely titillating information, James Cameron finally released the Avatar trailer, which is…ambiguous and vaguely titillating. Also he’s shilling Panasonic 3D televisions, which is just great, Jimmy, except are you planning to buy me one? My beautiful flat-screen HDTV is only 2 years old, but sure, whatever, make it obsolete.

Inglourious Basterds is kicking ass and taking Nazi scalps at the box office, and District 9 is certainly still holding its own. I make no attempt to disguise my glee in telling you that Robert Blahdriguez’s abysmal-looking Shorts isn’t doing so hot.

Casting’s beefing up for John Carter of Mars, starring the eye-meltingly hot Taylor Kitsch and a bunch of other people who aren’t Taylor Kitsch. Oh yeah, and Willem Dafoe. Frankly, this movie could be called Taylor Kitsch Stands in an Empty Room for Two Hours and co-star Carrot Top and Andie MacDowell and I’d still watch it.

The new teaser for Christopher Nolan’s Inception is up, and it gives us absolutely no information whatsoever, but a hell of a lot of awesomeness. I WANT TO GO TO THERE.

I guess Bryan Singer is done with the whole original idea thing? After the way-too-soon Battlestar Galactica retread, he’s looking to remake the outrageously weird 1981 Excalibur. I think Valkyrie broke him, you guys.

Happy scooping, and as always, drop me a line at maborders@gmail.com if you have any news I can use!

That Inception trailer looks awesome. still don't know what that trailer tells us about the film, but ... it looks all pretty.

I'm still holding out hope for Avatar. I have mixed emotions about the trailer, but often trailers don't live up to the movie. So here's to wishful thinking.

Note to Robert Zemeckis: Do not piss me off.

Tracy, I FEARED for Zemeckis when I read that news. Tracy will CUT YOU.

When mentioning Excalibur, I hope that by weird you mean INTENSELY AWESOME. Because it is.

I finally saw District 9, in Disneyland of all places, and felt really ill for the first half of it. Bloody hand-held cams!!! I did geek out over the trailer for Legion, and moderately geek-hum over Surrogates.

    Meredith Borders Tue, 08/25/2009 - 1:09pm

John, I own Excalibur on DVD, because that movie ROCKS. So yes, weird = intensely awesome.

"Frankly, this movie could be called Taylor Kitsch Stands in an Empty Room for Two Hours and co-star Carrot Top and Andie MacDowell and I’d still watch it."

    DOUBLE TRUE OF THE CENTURY.

except you forgot one key word in the title: shirtless. and i'm not talking carrot top (GROSS).

    Tracy Scott Wed, 08/26/2009 - 12:39pm

Not talking Carrot Top or Andie MacDowell (*yawn*).

Robert Zemeckis is officially dead to me. I don't care about his role on Back to the Future. Dead. Period. It's not even that I hold Yellow Submarine that sacred. I like it but why? What will the world gain by him remaking that film? Nothing. He, however, will probably get to add a new layer of hundies to his shorts. Despicable.

I am also glad that Robert Rodriguez's new film is doing horribly. I can't even think how a kid would find that entertaining. I think I would rather watch RR sit on the can for two hours while he plays with his iPhone.

I am seriously trying not to learn too much about Avatar. I want to go in with fresh eyes, ready to be melted.

Frankly, the only thing the original Yellow Submarine had going for it, and I say this as the kind of kid whose first words were 'John, Paul, George and Ringo,' y'all, is Beatles music and weird-ass trippiness. What is the point of a remake? What will be gained?

(in other words, what beardy said.)

SHIRTLESS TIM RIGGINS FOR PRESIDENT! In 2016. I'd be okay if our current president went shirtless too.
