The Mayor’s office is announcing today that Robert Redford’s Sundance Cinema will be opening in Bayou Place where Angelika used to be. From the press release:
Mayor Annise Parker and David Cordish, Chairman of the Cordish Companies, have announced that Robert Redford’s Sundance Cinema will open in Bayou Place in the heart of Houston’s downtown theater district. Sundance Cinemas Houston will feature specialized film programming, playing the finest movies for a discerning audience culled from film festivals and the best in general release. The venue will offer drinking and dining choices, all reserved seating, digital stereo sound and presentation, filmmaker screenings and exclusive events, plus free parking for patrons and community events. In fact, community events will mark the opening celebrations when the theatre opens on the first of November, just in time for the holiday season.
An estimated $2.25 million in improvements and renovations to the 36,00 square foot space is expected.
The Angelika closed unexpectedly last August leaving downtown Houston with a dearth of movie cinemas.
fantastic! Sure have missed the unique films and the ambiance it fosters. Can't wait for it to open!
This HAS to be good news, am I right, people! Hope it doesn't put a final nail in the River Oaks Theater's coffin, tho.
Wow! Congratulations and a big thanks to everyone who worked to make this happen. Merry Christmas film fans.
All reserved seating? How is that gonna work ... sounds icky to me.
I do not understand what aspect of reserved seating does not appeal to you. It is the standard in presentation events: ballet, football, stage theater, etc...
I missed the Angelika Theater. I'm glad Houston is getting back a chance to screen limited films from the Sundance festival. I was trying to see the latest remake of Jane Eyre and I was disappointed to see it was only screening at the River Oaks Theater. Seeing how grand a metropolis Houston is you would think there would be more than one location to view such gems.
Yeah!! I miss the Angelika as well. I hope the Redford joint also does crybaby matinees for those of us who aren't able to make it to as many movies as we'd like now with toddlers in tow. It was a wonderful program for the Angelika.
i wonder how much Robert Redford had to pay Angelika Houston for the naming rights.
i prefer the alamo drafthouse so i hope they cont on with their awesome films and not get blown away by this.
Looking forward to this! Houston needs more foreign/art house movies since the sudden close of Angelika. Happy to have a new place. And I LOVE that there will be all reserve seating. Finally!
It's about time. The River Oaks Can not possible show all the great indie films we miss. I'll go to both. We need this. I am sick of the corporate fare offered up in theatres,
more Rehash and trash.
