ArtStorm releases local-music compilation

Yesterday I read that Facebook will give you cancer. You know what it will also give you? Solid info. For instance, one of my many Facebook accounts was invited to a show called Summer Exposure featuring a long list of Houston's hot, young indies: The Mathletes, News on the March, Buxton, ListenListen, Elaine Greer, Alpaca, Roky Moon and BOLT, The Brood and Giant Princess.

I had to know more, so I contacted Eli Brumbaugh, whose email address was helpfully listed on the event.

29-95: So tell me more about this compilation.

Eli Brumbaugh: "Summer Exposure" is a compilation project between Joe Weber of Master Bedroom Studios, Chris Casio of ArtStorm Gallery, Alicia Seale of ArtStorm Gallery, and myself. The history of the project goes back about five years to the days of Joe Weber and myself attending the same high school here in Houston. I started taking part in and curating local art shows and later became part of the ArtStorm Collective, which works to give exposure to up-and-coming artists. Joe played in many bands and helped form News on the March and founded Master Bedroom Studios, which records local and regional acts at discount prices. Long story short we've talked about doing this project for years and finally the pieces all fell into place, the stars all aligned, and god decided to cut us all some slack.

29-95: What does ArtStorm have to do with it, and what's going on with ArtStorm?

EB: ArtStorm Records is a tentacle of ArtStorm Collective, which will include a DIY publishing section in the next year. Because of lack of sales and the economic downturn ArtStorm Gallery [in Caroline Collective] was forced to close its doors earlier this year but we decided that we wouldn't just roll over and die. We decided to take a vested interest in releasing CDs of local and regional acts. Chris better stated our mission on the website: "We release music with the intent of gaining exposure for the artists and preserving the integrity of the object that is the 'album.' Doing things by hand and in small runs allows for lower overhead and creates an object with old-world craftsmanship and evident personal care." The book project which we are currently accepting submissions for will be a collection of local and US artists but is still in the infant stages.

29-95: What's the purpose of the compilation?

EB: To celebrate and usher in what we all hope will be a great summer for Houston music and arts with anyone who is willing to come out and join us.

29-95: How did you choose the bands on the comp?

EB: They were our friends, friends of friends, and friends with one another and connected through many of the same people who all thought it would be a great thing to release. I can only hope that the release goes over great and further reflects what I feel are great improvements in the cooperation and talent of our local music scene.

The release party is 4 p.m.-2 a.m. Saturday, May 16 at the Mink. Cover is $10, which gets you a copy of the compilation.

Where's "The Wiggins"? why aren't they part of compilation?

    Chris Cascio Fri, 05/08/2009 - 11:15am

The bands on the compilation were selected by Joe Weber, who recorded the bands in his Master Bedroom Studios. It is his project in effect, and ArtStorm is taking care of the production and promotion of the discs, as well as the showcase. The Wiggins, however, was given an open invitation to release whatever he wants on ArtStorm records when we started it up. The door is always open for the Wiggins.
