Captured by Robots at Super Happy Fun Land tonight

It's not often that I can say that I saw something years ago that is touring tonight through Super Happy Fun Land like the old and unimpressed hipster that I am, but in the case of Captured! by Robots I can say that I have been there, done that, and it was a weird, weird night.

It was at UH, in a cafeteria, though I can't remember exactly when, and it was a double-bill with a sad iteration of Mister Sinus Theater -- just one of the guys, but he was showing Crossroads, starring Britney Spears, so it was a pretty good show.

The dark, cold cafeteria, with only one row of fluorescent lights lit, was a strange setting for a stranger act: a guy enslaved by messy-but-elaborate robots who obviously want to take enslave all of humanity and be in a band. Obviously. It's more comedy and electronics science fair project than serious band, but make no mistake: it is worth seeing. Like ripping off the faces of the Country Bear Jamboree and finding the face of Satan.

It's also kind of inspiring to look at this guy's tour itinerary and consider what kind of trouble it must be to lug his robots around (I particularly like the note next to his Oct. 5 date in Ogden, UT: "Canceled because of Monday Night Football, seriously?")

Captured! By Robots with Chiasma and Attic Ted. 9 p.m. tonight. Super Happy Fun Land.
