Freedom over Texas

Billy Currington headlines Freedom Over Texas 2012.Billy Currington headlines Freedom Over Texas 2012.Country stars and fireworks mean just one thing in Houston — Freedom Over Texas.

The annual Fourth of July extravaganza boasts headliners Billy Currington and Sara Evans, who’ve earned a handful of No. 1 singles on the country charts. (Neither act, however, has released a new album in more than a year.) But the zippier stuff comes earlier in the day if you’re prepared to brave the heat of the day.

The Ernest Walker Band features a rotating cast of musicians, including Santana singer Andy Vargas; Average White Band/Tower of Power vocalist Brent Carter; Grammy nominee and Prince protege Tamar Davis; and La Mafia keyboardist David DeLaGarza. They’ll perform twice throughout the evening.

Also scheduled are locals Yelba and Latin Fire, Chris Crump, Ira Perez and Tony Henry, along with patriotic exhibits and a kid zone.

A portion will be broadcast live from 7-10 p.m. on KTRK (Channel 13), with the fireworks music simulcast from 9:35-10 p.m. on KILT (100.3 FM).

In other words, stand, starve, remain dehydrated and parched, stay sober, boil and sweat, walk, and get sunburn. Awesome! Sounds like fun.

    PaulM Wed, 06/27/2012 - 3:34pm

Yeah, I think they need a few more rules, just to make it a little more fun. (Actually, I'm pretty sure there will be water, food and alcohol available, at Reliant Stadium prices. Enjoy!)

If you want to bring your own food & drinks over to the Freedom Fest, you can do it in other parts of Houston-over at White Oak Bayou park along I-10 & at Moody Park over on Fulton.-or anywhere facing downtown from the north to the west side.

    agnerd Thu, 06/28/2012 - 11:58am

So where can we go to watch the fireworks and hear the music, but still sit under an umbrella with a cooler? Which parts of the park will be accessible? Can someone post a map of the restricted areas so that we can know where to setup outside of the boundary?

    Whatever happened to FREE????

    Nobody knows Sun, 07/01/2012 - 2:33pm

stay at home and watch it on your big screen tv with friends instead. the traffic and the heat isn't worth it unless you live in the area and can walk.

Houston was ranked one of the worst places to spend 4th of July, and with good reason. I've been to this awful event before, and quite frankly the first commenter is spot on. The fireworks are so-so for a city our size. I've been to Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis and Miami for 4th of July. All far superior to our celebration. Heck, I have more fun in my grandma's backyard in Edinburg than I do in Houston for the 4th. I can drink beer, shoot off fireworks, eat great food and see a pretty good fireworks show in McAllen. I just wish the 4th wasn't on a Wednesday.

    BunnyPumper Fri, 07/06/2012 - 3:20pm

Ranked by who, exactly? I thought the fireworks were pretty good.

    TexasDan Mon, 07/02/2012 - 9:51am

Since Chron is only interested in Houston 4th of July display, Katy, Texas is having their 4th of July display at Katy Mills Mall. There is plenty of parking and is... Free. No festival, etc. Just meeting and greeting friendly people who evacuate well ahead of any impending hurricane along the Texas coast!! Katy is where it is at!

    Eww Katy Mon, 07/02/2012 - 11:44pm

Yeah but who'd want to go to Katy?

    Texanday it is Wed, 07/04/2012 - 3:02pm

I live in Katy, and i would be embarrassed to go this get together of yours in Mills! no thanks, would def go to Allen Parkway and enjoy the heat!

    FireworksGuy Tue, 07/03/2012 - 6:01pm

Heat, mosquitos, gang bangers, drive-bys, one HPD officer for every 25,000 patrons in attendance.......... no thanks.
