Get to know Roky Moon & BOLT

Roky Moon & BOLT have only been on the scene for a few months, but is already the backing band to Catastrophic Theater's next production and is working on its own rock-opera. Fans of glam-rock, take note: you can see them for free tonight.

    29-95: Who is Roky Moon?

A: Roky Moon is the pseudonym used by songwriter Mike Hardin in Roky Moon and BOLT! He is the leader of this ragtag group of so and so's. He writes songs and fronts the band.

    29-95: Who is Bolt?

A: BOLT! is the band! made up of members Aaron Echegaray (lead guitar), Jeoaf Johnson (drums), Chad Pinter (bass), and Cassie Hargrove (piano.)

29-95: Give us a brief history of the band.

A: The band is fairly new. I (Roky Moon) began writing the songs for Bolt in the winter months of 2008 and then in early 2009 I began looking for members to form a live band. I had been friends with Aaron since junior high school, so I went to him first to do the guitar parts knowing it was right up his alley. I also have known Jeoaf for a while and he played in some good bands (O Pioneers, Monocles) so I knew he would be a good fit, but more important than his drumming, he has a good leadership quality about him which I knew would be instrumental in forming a strong band and doing it fast.

Chad I just knew as a friend and all around amazing nice guy and I saw him play with his band black black gold but i was unsure of how good a bassist he would be. He has done fantastic! We began playing shows, but the whole time I kept wanting piano and felt like it was really the last piece that we needed. We were playing a show at Rudyard's with Ghosttown Electric and their singer William's girlfriend was at the show and approached us after the show wanting to be in BOLT! and wanting to play organ. I said sure, although what i really wanted was piano. As it turns out when she got to practice she was a much better pianist than anything, so Cassie Hargrove joined the band.

Since then we have won Best New Act in the Houston Press music awards and received recognition as Best New Act in the Best of Houston 2009. We played the Block Party earlier this year and we played Summer Fest. We have been recording for the last couple of months -- hence the only available recordings for anyone being live stuff and unfinished demos -- to do a couple of split records which will be released in 2010 and I have been writing a rock opera which will be completed in early 2010 and released as a record and a live theatrical performance.

29-95: How did you get involved with Catastrophic Theater’s upcoming production? What will be your role?

A: Aaron Echegaray actually knew some people and found out they were looking for some musicians and he talked to them about Bolt doing it and they were excited. They came to our practice room and did a rehearsal with [lead actor] Matt Brownlie and landed the part. In the play we will be playing Daniel Johnston's backing band and we are extremely excited about it! Who doesn't love Daniel Johnston?!

29-95: For those who haven’t seen you live or heard your music, what’s your band about? What do you do? How do you do it? Why do you do it?

A; I am a very big fan of glam and other '70s rock, I have been since I was young. So one day I thought, why don't I just make a band that plays that genre? A new band with new songs that continue on with that sound and style but tries to make it better than some bands have done in the past. So instead of it coming across as kitschy or contrived it feels genuine because it is genuine.

I began putting together songs that were in the vein of Bowie and T-Rex but we also want to do more. I think we all as a band want to boogie and bring a high level of energy to the shows. The set is crafted in a way so that the songs tie together, and there are even shorter pieces of songs put together to form medleys that run together as a whole piece. Over time, through recordings and other variations of the live set, people will get to hear those differences and hear those songs as mini rock operas.

This will all lead up to the full-on rock opera we will be doing in 2010, which is something I haven't seen anybody else doing and I hope that people will come to see us and leave feeling like they have been to a unique event.

Ultimately we do all of this because we love to play music and have this new, exciting idea to express.

29-95 presents Roky Moon & BOLT. 10 p.m. Thursday. Continental Club. Free.
