The Austin City Limits Festival brings bands to Texas, most of whom leave immediately after for hipper climes. Some, like the following, not only stick around, they come to Houston, of all places:
• Perhaps even more confusing than Dave Matthews Band headlining ACLFest is the appearance of R&B singer John Legend, who will no doubt put on a great show to a bunch of people unlikely ever to buy his records. He stops in Houston at Verizon Wireless Theater Wednesday, Sept. 30, then heads to Austin a couple of days later.
• Virginia-based country-rock band Sons of Bill will be at the House of Blues Sept. 30.
• Dallas-based rock 'n' soul band with a lot of hair, Jonathan Tyler & The Northern Lights, will be at the House of Blues on Sept. 30.
• Nashville blues-rock songwriter Jonell Mosser plays the Mucky Duck on Oct. 1. Beware: not the hippest of the ACL crowd.
• California-based rock band The Henry Clay People will be at House of Blues Oct. 1 along with buzzy-buzz-buzz-been-on-MTV-and-Letterman band the Airborne Toxic Event, also playing ACL.

• Brooklyn-based weird-pop band Suckers will play a show at Mango's with Titus Andronicus and So So Glos on Oct. 1.
• Heartless Bastards plays the House of Blues Oct. 1.
• Jamaican reggae musician Eek-a-Mouse performs at Dean's Credit Clothing downtown, of all places, on Oct. 2.
• A shock to me a couple of weeks ago when I saw it on a friend's blog: The B-52s will be at the Grand 1894 Opera House in Galveston on Oct. 2.
• The astounding return of the Decemberists to Houston: Oct. 2 at House of Blues.
• The Dodos play the Orange Show on Oct. 3.
• The Greencards from Austin does its regular Mucky Duck stopover on Oct. 3.
• Arctic Monkeys will be at the House of Blues on Oct. 3.
• Thievery Corporation plays the House of Blues on Oct. 6.
• You're probably also already aware that Kings of Leon is playing the Toyota Center, also Oct. 6.
• The Low Anthem, from Rhode Island, will be heading for Houston later in the month; Oct. 27 with Blind Pilot at House of Blues. CLARINET ACTION!
• Venezuelan pop/party/rock band Los Amigos Invisibles will play Houston later in the month, Oct. 29, with Plastilina Mosh at Escapade 2001. Check out this sweet vid:
• Mute Math also performs in Houston later in the month; Oct. 30 at Warehouse Live.
"isn't terribly impressive...."
What about The Walkmen, Phoenix, Them Crooked Vultures (w/ John Paul Jones, Josh Homme, Dave Grohl), Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Grizzly Bear, The Decemberists, Arctic Monkeys, Dirty Projectors, The Dead Weather, Here We Go Magic, Ghostland Observatory, Dan Auerbach and Black Joe Lewis?
Ok, the line-up isn't terribly impressive if you don't like indie rock....
These are bands I will see if they're put in front of me and I'll probably like a couple of their sets, but there's nothing here that screams "I must see that!" Except, obviously, Matthew McConaughey's protegee on his j.k. livin' label, Mishka. I will have to see that.
Maybe you really aren't that 'in' to music. There are even more bands that are slipping through the cracks. The Sounds play this Sunday night at House of Blues, an excellent, but rather unknown band. We're getting good shows that aren't affiliated with ACL too, like Art Brut, Junior Boys, The Bravery and legends like Dinosaur Jr., The Pogues and Drive By Truckers.
That Dodos show at the Orange Show is on the 3rd, not the 2nd.
Fixed, thanks.
What time does the Eek-A-Mouse show start??
Dean's MySpace says 10 p.m. You should call to be sure.
