Fake Problems make real good tunes: SideOneDummy/ Bryan Sheffield
Southern charm aside, the young Floridians in Fake Problems have displayed a wealth of songwriting maturity beyond their years with the band’s latest release, Real Ghosts Caught On Tape .
Fake Problems will be joining fellow rock ’n’ roll revivalists The Gaslight Anthem Thursday night at Warehouse Live. 29-95’s Mike Damante recently spoke with lead singer and guitarist Chris Farren.
29-95: Being from Florida, how influenced are you guys from the local scene there with bands like Against Me! and Hot Water Music?
Farren: Starting our band we were influenced by bands like Bright Eyes and Cursive. When we started touring and getting our name out there we got embraced by the Gainesville scene and that was how we met Against Me! They took us on our first big tour and helped us put out our first few records. They influenced us on the business, ethics aspect of being a band, rather musically.
29-95: What is it like being on your with musical kindred spirits The Gaslight Anthem? Does it feel like your bands are all part of a movement bringing back older sounds to a new generation?
Farren: I think we are both bands who recognize where we came from and both like the revolution of rock’n’roll. We dissect that and are influenced by older generations of music like Bruce Springsteen and even like Chuck Berry.
29-95: Real Ghosts Caught On Tape expands even further on a classic rock sound, was that the mindset going into recording the album?
Farren: I think the mindset was not so much classic rock, but more like 60s pop, like Phil Spector and the girl group thing.
29-95: : The single, Songs For Teenagers, alludes to drugs and lies. Care to elaborate more on what the song is about?
Farren: It was inspired by a story I heard about a girl from our town that passed away. I didn’t really know much about the story, but I knew a little about it and wanted to tell a story from her viewpoint and that is kind of what came out.
This is the goods. Nice one, Mike.
