You(Genious) left behind his trademark white linen suit and fedora to sing me some of his smooth, sexed-up R&B one afternoon. Just him and me and a camera. I’d met him a few times and seen him perform before but didn’t know him all that well. Remarkably, it wasn’t anywhere near as weird as you’d think.

It certainly helped that You(Genious) is such a natural showman, as at home performing as a bee in a hive. He’s great both performing his own material (recently tapping Spain Colored Orange for an airtight backing band) and emceeing anything from an art opening to a bachelorette party. And he wouldn’t tell me his real name – the hallmark of a true showman. I think maybe it’s Eugene, but I can’t be certain.

You(Genious)’s new album, Lust, Love, and Time: The Death of a Man, just came out this past month. He’s so confident that it’ll get you laid that many copies come with a condom attached to the back. Now THAT’S value.
