Live from Joe Mathlete's living room: Woozyhelmet

God dammit I love Woozyhelmet. You know when you see an amazing-but-sloppy band and they're having one of those shows where all the songs derail halfway through, where every song collapses in the middle just long enough for the chaos to become noticeable even if you didn't know the songs, but then all the sudden everyone finds the beat at exactly the perfect moment just in time to finish that song and prepare to careen into the next one? Every Woozyhelmet show I've ever seen is like that, and it's because they've got the sense to write those collapses (or lack the sense to edit them out during the writing process).

Toto plays drums in electronic post-rockers Octopus Project, Dinki plays bass in power-pop group The Sour Notes and Jay records great off-kilter folk music under his own name but I'll take Woozyhelmet over all of them. "What Was Dad Talking to Daniel About?" does a great job to show off both their "stomping spazz-punk temper tantrum" and "itchingly melodic fist-pumping indie rock anthem" sides. I'm pretty sure it also rhymes "superstar" with "Jupiter," which is so brilliant it's stupid.

Side note - Even in stripped-down form, Woozyhelmet ended up being so loud they were the first band I've ever filmed that's gotten me in trouble with my neighbors. And that's counting Young Mammals, who set fire to our front lawn.

I made it to 1:54 and then decided I need to quit my job and start a band. Seriously. If these guys are that good, I'm going to be the greatest musician to ever come out of Meyerland. And I have zero musical talent. ZERO. Is this really that great?!? What am I missing here? Is this so avant garde that my tiny brain just cant absorb its greatness? Please help. I WANT to appreciate this.

Brandi's Rickenbacker is totally SUH-weet. But I digress before I even start.

They are definitely a band that would be featured on KTRU, and if you're not a fan of eclectic music, then these guys are right out. If I had to label them I would have to coin a new genre, Avant House Party.

That being stated, I'm not sure I understand much of anything, but whatever reason, "What Was Dad Talking to Daniel About?" struck my I-dig-it chord. I went to their site and there's quite a few songs they've put up for one to download at one's leisure. This is great, 'cos if none of it works, one can delete it and be done.

If inclined, point your browser to http://www.woozyhelmet.com/, the music is in the aptly titled music link. Who'd have thunk it.

The static television was nice touch.
