The Market Square Park downtown will officially reopen on Aug. 28, with performances by the John Evans Band and singer-songwriter Andrew Karnavas.
The renovated park -- framed by Preston, Congress, Milam and Travis Streets -- will now include a sizable dog run, along with a lawn and patio area. Ground was broken on the project late last year.
A fall concert series begins Sept. 8 with performances by Soular Grooves and Beetle. Other performers include Two Star Symphony and Roky Moon and Bolt (Sept. 22), Tody Castillo and Black Queen Speaks (Oct. 27) and Sarah Sharp and Grandfather Child (Nov. 10).
Robert Ellis and the Boys will play classic country music on Oct. 16 as part of A Night at Market Square. That night will also include a performance by California singer-songwriter Tim Easton.
Other events include a garden dedication on Sept. 11. The park's Lauren's Garden is named for a Houston native, Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas, who was on board United flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001. The garden was designed in tribute to those killed on the terror attacks that day.
If you go downtown at night, you’ll probably wind up robbed and murdered.
...robbed or murdered or worse.
Really? And you got these facts from where? You might want to get out more often.
Where do you live? Downtown is safer than the burbs
Robbed and murdered? I am often downtown, leaving the theatre district area at 11pm or later. I have NEVER had a problem walking to my car, which is generally parked blocks away. I walk to Minute Maid park, Toyota Center, Wortham Center, and elsewhere. I am a 50 year old female, and believe you should be cautious anywhere in the city, but I have never had a reason to be afraid downtown.
Sorry, I call bullshit on this comment. Downtown Houston is one of the safest areas in all of Houston. Sorry. You obviously don't get downtown much.
Robbed and Murdered? Yeah, I guess that's one way to descibe parking downtown. :P
FYI you ignorant fool, according to the crime statistics of Harris County the 77002 zip code.....that's Downtown Houston has had the LOWEST crime rate in the entire county for the last few years. Safest place in town. Try educating yourself before you spout more mindless drivel.
yawn
Glad to see John Evans and band opening it. I like them a lot. As far as the anonymous person who commented that if you go downtown at night you'll probably get robbed and murdered, that's loony. I have been downtown at night many times and never been robbed, certainly haven't been murdered, since I am writing this.
Suburbanites need not show up. Urban infill is a GOOD thing.
Market Square is looking great and Two Star Symphony is well worth a trip to downtown.
Reopening of Market Square is great news. Enjoying Market Square in
the late 60's was indeed a historic musical treat. From Jimmy Smith, The Thirteen Floor Elevators to The TSU Toronadoes, music was in the air.
Do hope that local talent will have a chance to express their musical messages. "Charity starts at home."
Attention peeps, what you are experiencing is the ignorance and idiocy of the Houston Chronicle commenters entering the 29-95.com through the chron.com link.
Really, something's got to be done about it. Its stupid when I read the Chronicle and its stupid when I read 29-95.com
Its just a suggestion, but force people to create accounts to comment at all and delete/block people as they spew their garbage, 'cause right now these pigeons can just fly by and shit all over the shiny website.
Don't be stupid when you're downtown: Nobody wants to be the exception that proves the rule. There are places downtown on the NE side near the dormitory hotels and homeless shelters that I avoid during daylight because of the derelicts and drunks hanging out on the streets. At night I keep to the well-lit streets, garages, and tunnels when I go to the theater. The Galleria parking lots are more dangerous but I don't drop my guard there either. Stay away from the raves down by the bayou, don't drink til you're stoopid, and take a friend or 2 with you.
What's the word on Party on the Plaza at Jones Plaza? Haven't seen any ads at all for that and the plaza predates Market Square and Discovery Green's concert series.
So what time is the Saturday show? I didn't see a time listing in the article.
TERRIE: Halva jazz trio and Mayor Parker will speak from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Andrew Karnavas plays from 7-8 p.m. and John Evans from 8-9 p.m.
I live across from the park in a loft. The park is a beautiful new space and very, very safe. La Carafe is across the street and always crowded. Downtown is only dangerous if you don't act wisely!
Like drumb47, I remember the Cellar Door & Love Street Light Circus in the Square & the music they brought to the public. Before the 'burbs had all the multi-screen movie theaters, my dates were taken to the Metropolitan, Loew's, Majestic, & Delman theaters. I'm glad the downtown area is rocking again! I think I'll take my bride, who at 12 rode the bus to see the Beatles matinee at the Sam Houston Coliseum on 8/19/1965, to celebrate the new Market Square Park!
