The 29-95/Continental Club Thursday night concert series continues apace. This week's band is The Gold Sounds from beautiful Deer Park, Texas. It is gearing up for a big CD release later this year. Get to know a bit more about the band:
29-95: I went to high school in Deer Park. Do they still talk about me there?
The Gold Sounds: Well it's been a long time since we've been to Deer Park High School so we haven't heard personally, but our friend teaches there now and he says they can't stop talking about you. He says they call you Sara Caress...or so we hear. You've probably never heard that before.
Sara says: It was unavoidable with a name like "Cress." There aren't many avenues for a nickname, except for someone who called me "Cree" when I begged for someone to give me a nickname. It didn't stick.
29-95: What does gold sound like?
GS: There are all types of gold sounds. Our "gold" sounds like a three-piece band from Deer Park and hopefully sounds like your birthday.
29-95: What's the history of the Gold Sounds?
GS: We first came together in mid-2005 as a 4-piece and tried to put together some songs sporadically while Chris was going to school in Austin. After we lost a rhythm guitarist, we continued as a 3-piece until we finally made our live debut in late 2006. The next year we made around give different versions of our handmade EP and sold them/gave them away exclusively at our shows. The EP was basically a demo for the upcoming album.
29-95: Tell us about the new album coming out in November. What does it sound like, when will it be available?
GS: The album has been a long time coming and it's our first full-length so we're pretty excited. We went up to Austin and recorded the album at the Bubble studios back in January with Alex Lyon. It's a combination of all our different sounds. We have our borderline cock rock, some weepers, fuzzy things, garage-y things, and some other random stuff we want to throw in. As of right now, the release date really depends on how long it takes for us to get our CDs back but we are looking at a late November or early December.
29-95: What are your favorite Houston bands?
GS: We live a little while outside of all the local action so we don't get to go to as many shows as we would like. Ones we've been fans of have been Ume (don't know if they count but they're one of our favs), the late great McKenzies, Paris Falls, Buxton, Rocrament, News on the March, the Tontons and Beyonce.
29-95: Why should people come out to the Continental Club this Thursday to see you play? State your case.
GS: Because it's free and you Houston guys and gals have most likely never seen our band. Come out, have some drinks, and hear a mix of old and new songs from our upcoming album. We promise to destroy. Thank you.
29-95 presents The Gold Sounds at the Continental Club. 10 p.m. Thursday. Free.
