Friday, Jan. 22:
• If you haven't come out to a 29-95.com Live at the Continental Club show because it's been on Thursday nights, here's your chance. The idea has always been to present great Houston bands at a club that we find is pretty universally loved for its diverse crowd, its nice location, ease of parking, cheap drinks, there are tacos right next door, and that awesome back patio. Come see the Live Lights and Tax The Wolf on us and enjoy all of those extra perks. 10 p.m. Continental Club. Free.
• It's a lovely singer-songwriter night at Rudz. Former Houstonian (and really fine pop singer-songwriter) Krista Vossler returns to town, sharing a bill with Vanessa Peters, Matt Harlan and Swedish (he's from Sweden!) folk singer-songwriter MC Hansen. 10 p.m. Rudyard's.
• Another lovely singer-songwriter, Chase Hamblin, shares a bill with The Nightmare River Band (New York punk-country-rock) and pretty, pretty, pretty local singer-songwriter Maryanna Sokol. 10 p.m. Mango's. $7.
• American Sharks, Springfield Riots, Passengers, Big Black Spiders at Walter's, which still has not closed. I guess closing by Halloween meant Halloween 2014.
Oh, and here's a video of a Big Black Spider:
• Another Haiti relief concert featuring Houston rock bands The Factory Party, The Failed Attempt, Shark Attack and Versecity. Live art by Skeez. DJ Sun, Kung Fu Pimp, Brad Slack, Chris Costello also spinning tunes. No cover, but donations are pretty much required or you're an ass. Warehouse Live. Doors open at 6 p.m. 18 and up.
• Pop-rock, y'all: Deep Ella, Language Room, Courier, and Mahoney. 9 p.m. Fitzgerald's.
• Israeli trance! Who knew? The band is called Infected Mushroom and they will be party-starting at Rich's.
Saturday, Jan. 23:
• The latest band featured in the Live from Joe Mathlete's Living Room series. Well, just Roky Moon. Anyway, the band is playing with Dax Riggs and Benjamin Wesley, which I should mention just put out a video that everyone slobbered over. 10 p.m. Rudyard's.
• Texas Metal Fest 2010 features Lillian Axe, Vital Remains, Rated E The Band, Pinhed (CD release), Lycophile, Consumned, Insidious Decrepancy, Sever The Silence, Bound in Flesh, Uncleansed, Lao Tzu, Anguish in Exile, Zone of Inhibition, Convicted of Treason, Sculpting Atrocity, Krankshaft, Burnt Face Jack, Ninth Kingdom, Sadistic Butchering and 28th Street. Meridian. I'm just telling you this as an excuse to post this video:
• Texas-music troubadour Ray Wylie Hubbard performs an in-store performance at Cactus Music at 3 p.m., then a show later at the Mucky Duck.
• Austin-based HSPVA alum and folk singer-songwriter Sara Hickman comes to town. 9 p.m. NiaMoves.
Sunday, Jan. 24:
• Read our Q&A with The Sword, who is playing with Woodgrain. Warehouse Live. $13-$15.
• Finally, the best band documentary you'll ever see came out last year, Anvil!: The Story of Anvil. It was really cool seeing the film at the Angelika last year, with a brief performance by the band itself after the showing. But the Angelika is no place to see a metal band, I'll tell you that. House of Blues will be a much better place. With SID 17. 8 p.m. $20-$50.
