Sadness alert: 103.7 changes format

Radio DJ's Steve Robinson and Donna McKenzie at the old 103.7 Houston Adult Alternative. Billy Smith II / Houston Chronicle

KHJK 103.7 FM will cease to be an "Adult Alternative" station at 5 p.m. today when it flips to a Christian CHR format under Air1.

Under program director Steve Robison and DJ Donna McKenzie 103.7 offered some much-needed variety on the airwaves, mixing some relatively fringier fare in with more mainstream pop. In short, it was one of the few places in town to hear the more popular sort of indie rock exemplified by Modest Mouse and the Shins, as well as a varied strata of '80s and '90s rock that ranged from jam band acts (Big Head Todd & the Monsters) to mainstream jangle pop (the Gin Blossoms) to mascara rock (the Cure) to '80s alternative (pre-hit-making R.E.M.).

Boo!!! I really liked this channel because of the variety! I was recently surprised when I heard them playing some new Gomez tunes. I liked to tune in when everyone else was talking too much.

    ronda Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:18am

This is not a good change. 103.7 with Donna Mac was one of the only FM stations I still listened to from time to time. I am glad I have XM satellite, is all I can say.

    Randy Thu, 07/19/2012 - 5:14pm

I am just sick over this it hit me like a hammer. I listen every day at work, now what am I supposed to do? My only option is the Buzz but they talk to much in the morning..... What a pain!! Good Luck to Steve and Donna Mac. I'll miss the Rocket Scientists and the Friday wave reports from Billy Blues...

    JadenKaye Fri, 07/20/2012 - 9:11pm

I'm sick to my stomach over this! I listened 99.99% of the time, only flipped to listen to NPR on KUHF. What about Dr. Luke? He played the ones that no one else did.

    Big O Tue, 08/07/2012 - 8:29am

bummer, but in general Houston's rock radio total disappoints. I travel to minor markets like OKC, Shreveport, Corpus Christi and San Antonio, that ALL have way better rock formats.
This change is just making me re-up my XM.

    BrewMaster Fri, 09/07/2012 - 8:11pm

Totally agree, 103.7 offered the diversity in style and genre that made it interesting to listen too. You never knew what would be played next. I hope this format reappears on the Houston radio dial somewhere.

    grogba Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:27pm

if this doesn't make people realize how bad houston radio is, they will never realize it.

    TheAmy Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:39am

So true!! I have recently come to appreciate Christian music formats, but Jack FM was the start to Houston radio greatness! Instead of playing Top 40 like everything else Jack FM was hope that Houston radio could play favorites and the fringe. Sad day indeed!

    mcarroll15 Wed, 07/18/2012 - 2:20pm

At least they didn't split mid-song as the old 92.1 did. And yes, Houston radio sucks compared even to much smaller cities and markets!

    CJ Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:32pm

This is NOT good for Houston radio which is lacking in every way, shape and form. 103.7 WAS a nice respite from the mundane. Ugghhhh

    Bummer Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:33pm

That sucks. I actually listen to this station a lot. I have no interest in Christian CHR. Guess the first thing I do when I get into the car after work, is delete this from my dial.

    Stupid move, KHJK.

    Jim C Wed, 07/18/2012 - 6:58am

12 FM presets, fewer than 12 stations worth listening to.

    Cielo Wed, 07/18/2012 - 9:58am

    That is the TRUTH!

    whamm101 Wed, 07/18/2012 - 2:05pm

I have 6 of my presets on Dallas stations for when I travel up there. I clearly don't need those 6 here in Houston and only getting worse. Maybe I can set 3 of my last 6 to Austin.

    DavidinPearland Wed, 07/18/2012 - 3:12pm

Houston radio just got a lot worse!!!! The only stupid city that has the same songs played on two FM stations. Now this news!!
Glad I have SirusXM Radio to save me...I also miss Sports Radio 1310 The Ticket in Dallas(The best sports talk in the state!!!)

    Guest Who's Coming to Dinner? Wed, 07/25/2012 - 9:54pm

YES! Man, I miss the Ticket so much. Listen to it every now and then on my PC via the web. I just cannot accept that Dallas radio is so much more robust. We have Tejano, awful sports radio, and IdiotPop. And 17 zillion people that apparently don't know what they're missing.

The new format folds in less than a year, mark my words.

    map Thu, 07/26/2012 - 6:10pm

I know for sure that this new format will not fold in a year because many people my age will start listening to it. I have always been in the christian music but the only station in the Houston market was not doing it for me. I notice listening to this all day today that the music they are playing is more christian rock and less church music. With the new generation getting older they will start listening to this. I have heard other city's sports talk and they come no where close to 790.

    jhollywood Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:36pm

I read about that a few months ago and was hoping it wasn’t true. The best, somewhat descent station this town had and it’s gone. It’s so sad our city has such terrible selection for radio. Let’s play the same songs and same artist day in and day out. They really need to listen to some of the stations in Austin and San Antonio and get a hint. Thank goodness for internet radio; and thanks to HP, I’m going to continue to stream rock101klol on my windows media player.

    ShannonTX Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:39pm

Horrible news, only station that keeps me off my iPod while in the car. Adios radio, you are officially dead

    Mudkip Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:39pm

It was inevitable considering the position of that station's transmitter. A CHR station targeting an affluent audience that fuzzes out east of I-45 just can't work in this town. A low power Christian regional station is much more suited for that signal.

Here's hoping a future company isn't spooked by Cumulus's failure with the Jack format and tries again with a better signal. Maybe something based on the Mo City towers.

    Mudkip Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:42pm

Oh, and KRBE is now the only Cumulus station left in town. KRBE has been on a serious downtrend since 95.7 got going last year...I wouldn't be shocked if Cumulus divests here and wouldn't be totally floored if there's a format change there.

    JadenKaye Fri, 07/20/2012 - 9:18pm

I don't get it. They shared the same lobby with KRBE, I know because I've won prizes from both stations over the years. Why couldn't KRBE have been axed instead. They are what they once were, that's why I listened to 103.7, because I outgrew KRBE. I will now cherish the RHCP tickets I won from Steve!

    Master Dragon Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:43pm

One more nail in the coffin of Houston radio. This has been going on for years and will continue until there are a few stations left that no one listens to. But...shades of the old Zrock, here we have a sort-of rock station converted to Christian programming. That's fine. I'll stick with ripping my songs to MP3. No talk, no commercials, no censorship, I listen to what I want, in the order that I want. Now I suggest everyone else do the same and let all these useless radio stations go out of business. Perhaps this station will fold when they find they have no listeners.

    AnonymousX8 Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:44pm

    Hmmm... Who listens to radio?

    ShannonTX Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:45pm

Horrible news. Adios radio, you are officially dead.

    SCRSX Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:46pm

who listens to FM radio anyway?

    foodforthought Wed, 07/18/2012 - 6:13pm

People who are in touch with their local news events and aware of whats going on (news) with like share same thoughts in music.

    Rocky Balboa Mon, 07/23/2012 - 8:31am

It seems AM is way more popular now.

    houstonradiostinks Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:46pm

Will someone in Houston radio please get a clue and get a good radio station put on the air. Unless you’re a teenager, no one wants to hear the same artist and same songs day after day. Classic artist like Led Zep and VH put out more than 3 records and on all those records were lots and lots of songs. Just because the song wasn’t released as a single doesn’t mean you can’t play it.
If you haven’t heard or read about it, there is a website www.rock101klol.com (temp under construction, but can still stream from a media player)…listen to it. Learn from it.

    bummedbigtime Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:46pm

So bummed! One of the few stations that didn't make me want to pull my hair out. I think even the rock station was playing Fun and Gotye now. I actually discovered new bands on this station. Guess this station will be deleted once I get into my car tonight. I have the ability for 10 pre-set stations on my radio, and I can't even fill all 10 cause Houston radio sucks so bad.

    The Prof Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:48pm

Oh goodie!!!!! Another right-wing magic god in the sky radio station! Just what we wanted, more crap! More and more, I listen to college radio, looking at you Alvin JC, or CD's. This station is now off my radio dial.

    AllYourBaseNowBelongToUs Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:14am

FYI, there are more Spanish stations than Christian stations in Houston. I listen to 'radio' via my iPhone.

    EdBdCJ Wed, 07/18/2012 - 4:54pm

    Exactly PROF!!

    WhiteRabbit Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:50pm

    Pandora is AWESOME!

    foodforthought Wed, 07/18/2012 - 6:07pm

Theres also tuneinradio app for android and iphone. Check out sky.fm indie rock they are sometimes alright. Sometimes they play amateurishness music though. But they play sigur ros and other new indie artists. Luke Cramptons has very good podcast on I-tunes as well.

    Anonymous1651 Thu, 07/26/2012 - 3:16pm

    Pandora sucks

    Oakforest Horn Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:57am

Haven't had to use Houston radio in years. Thank You XM!

    Brains Wed, 07/18/2012 - 12:17pm

Too bad Sirius/XM sounds absolutely terrible. Just fine for voice-only/talk radio, not acceptable for music.

    Pokesfan86 Thu, 07/19/2012 - 8:27pm

Sirius sounds great, what are you talking about?? Alt nation and Sirius XMU are my two favorites.

    Troysephus Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:51pm

With this station gone, I guess I'll have to just listen to my 8-track player until they invent mp3 players and I no longer have to listen to the radio.

    Jenny Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:52pm

Oh good - we don't have nearly enough bible thumping and Xian swarmy singing - not nearly enough!

    Jenna Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:53pm

This totally sucks....I LOVE THIS STATION as is. Just when there is a radio station that plays some real music they go and change it. YOU SUCK KHJK

    I Hate United Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:03am

"You Suck KHJK"...... grow up Jenna!

Jenna, YOU suck. You're a royal pain the arse. Shove it!

    sjstewart417 Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:53pm

Wow. This is really going to make the morning commute just that much more awful. I really enjoyed this station in its Adult Alternative format. I had my kitchen radio tuned to 103.7 and virtually never changed it. Guess I will have to change the station tonight. Doesn't leave much room for choice in Houston stations. Very, very sad.

    jeepins Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:53pm

Houston radio just turned to CRAP again! Please start up another station like 103.7 asap! Time to break out the iPod in the car again. Talk about turning an otherwise perfect day 180°.

    Eric Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:54pm

I knew this day would come, but what a shame. An Adult Alternative format would do good if they (1) had better reception inside the loop, where the audience for that is largest, and (2) focused more on "adult alternative" and not be so tempted to play all of the Buzz-like artists/songs that are already overplayed.

The Adult Alternative format (think The Spectrum on SiriusXM) would appeal to a much sought after demographic for advertisers, but I think it's too late for Houston. Everyone I know that loves music has given up on Houston radio (which is widely known as the city with one of the worst music radio choices) and has moved to Satellite, Internet, or their iPod.

Going Christian is the safer business move, I guess, which it is all about the money. It's just embarrassing for Houston that there's not a station that focuses on quality good pop/rock music.

    Jenna Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:56pm

this totally sucks..........YOU SUCK KHJK to change this format. this station was the only one in houston that actually played a great variety of ALL music. i am really really bummed. thanks to this station for introducing me to alabama shakes, playing grace potter and florence and the machine and all the REAL music thats out there.

    Sotexson Tue, 07/17/2012 - 4:56pm

Man Houston radio blows. This station was a nice respite from the endless drivel on the others. First the jazz station, now this. I may have to get satellite radio.

    bkbirge Wed, 07/18/2012 - 12:31pm

It is amazing that in a city this size that the radio sucks so completely. Radio in general sucks but Houston is a wasteland even in comparison. We should have several jazz and classical stations just based on the support for arts around here, not to mention college radio playing the newest and weirdest stuff. Instead we have Christian AOR, apoplectic talk radio, and top 40 mixed with Mariachi. I'm surprised anyone who has an opinion about music even bothers to listen anymore.

    JW Tue, 07/17/2012 - 5:01pm

You have to be kidding me, really poor business decision, what were you thinking? Alert, Big ratings drop starting at 5pm today!

    Fred Wed, 07/18/2012 - 4:14am

Well since KHJK had no ratings before 5PM that won't be much of a drop.

    RadioRadio Tue, 07/17/2012 - 5:07pm

Mudkip, I don't know where you get your information from, but 95.7 has been trending down for a year now. KRBE is beating them in the demo they're both fighting for (18-34 yr old females). 95.7 can keep their 6 yr old demo.

    RadioRadio Tue, 07/17/2012 - 5:08pm

Oh, and KHJK had no say in the format flip. Cumulus sold the station so the new owner can flip it to whatever the want.

    publicacct Tue, 07/17/2012 - 5:09pm

BOO. Radio is dead to me now. This radio station played Little Lion Man before Mumford & Sons was even heard of by the other stations.

    Eric G. Tue, 07/17/2012 - 5:12pm

Meh, no big loss. KACC 89.7 > KHJK 103.7

    YeahBuddy Tue, 07/17/2012 - 5:13pm

Houston radio is already brutally bad, and another selection is leaving the dial. Donna Mac and Steve are excellent people and I hope they turn up at another Houston station, soon.

    missradio Tue, 07/17/2012 - 5:15pm

I will really miss this station in its adult alternative format. I even added it as a preset in a rent car last week! Very sad day for Houston. Time to add satellite radio to my car...

    jf Tue, 07/17/2012 - 5:16pm

That was the only radio station where the program director earned his/her money. Everyone else just rotates the same crap over and over.

    VictorD Tue, 07/17/2012 - 5:18pm

Maybe someone could start a petition to get it changed back?

    realist Tue, 07/17/2012 - 5:19pm

I am not surprised that people are not excited about another Christian radio station in Houston but ratings drive revenue and it is all about revenue. Apparently not enough people were devoted to the station to make it worth keeping.

    Will Whitehead Tue, 07/17/2012 - 5:26pm

What a sad day for Houston radio.

    Anonymous999 Tue, 07/17/2012 - 5:29pm

In the last couple of years, I have had about half a dozen impulse album purchases based on songs I've heard on JackFM. I can kind of tolerate The Buzz (94.5), but the same 10 singles all day long with a bunch of The Offspring/Chili Peppers thrown in for "variety" gets real old real fast.
Gonna really miss Luke Crampton's Sunday show as well.

    Hobbes Tue, 07/17/2012 - 5:33pm

Well, what a shame. No choice but to renew the satellite subscription. Alt Nation, Firstwave, it's worth the money.

    Slink Tue, 07/17/2012 - 5:33pm

This is so WRONG!!! WE don't need another Christian radio station that no one listens to. I'm very upset with this news. And will miss Steve Robison and DJ Donna McKenzie.
Where are the Gen X going to get their music now in this city?
    Very Upset indeed!

    Haggles Tue, 07/17/2012 - 5:38pm

I was wondering what was going on when I turned it on for my drive home today. Ugh. Now I have to find another station that plays the crazy mix of music I like - somehow I doubt that is going to be easy here!

    jesus christ Tue, 07/17/2012 - 5:46pm

Stop hating on KHJK for playing songs about Me. I will get every single one of you for that! Santa Claus isn't the only one keeping a naughty/nice list.

    CarlosSantannaclaus Tue, 07/17/2012 - 5:55pm

Well, shoot. I discovered this station maybe a year ago and have listened to almost nothing else since. I am a Dean & Rog fan, but I've not listened faithfully to them since finding 103.7.

The bad thing about the station, for me, was the signal. It is terrible on the west side and Sugar Land. Very bad static at times.

I hope someone else picks up the format, because I'm sure NOT listening to Christian.

    hello Tue, 07/17/2012 - 7:55pm

    well said.

89.7 KACC don't fail me now!

    KB Wed, 07/18/2012 - 12:11am

Unless Alvin Community College closes down or decides to change their format, then you're screwed.

    evive Tue, 07/17/2012 - 6:00pm

THIS new radio really is not my thing .. I gave it a chance the new host talks about Jesus as if he was a person. Then he set up rules. Most christian rocks sounds unfortunately sounds mundane. Same tempo over and over again. Dont get me wrong theres Godsmack and Switchfoot but for rock there's only so much you can listen to.

Some people might say that were all connected spiritually in way as tree growing. where creator is at its source. We create thoughts(branches) but and in some ways also share thoughts. The stronger the emotion the stronger the memory and thought. The more variety the more it opens up new ideas and hence the more evolve we become. Same type of music over and over hinders that. Its a sad day.

The variety they had going was amazing, even from different eras. I can most people that listened to 103.7 adult alternative radio were intelligent. Alot of good music from very creative artists. I will miss that. Guess ill be listening to more internet indie rock.

    Eric Tue, 07/17/2012 - 9:47pm

Godsmack is Christian? Did I miss something?

    Anonymous1837 Tue, 07/24/2012 - 5:13pm

    Avery7 Tue, 07/17/2012 - 6:05pm

I second that BOOOOO!!!!!!! Now the only station for variety will be KACC, Alvin Community College's station - IF you can pick it up. Shame on Houston radio for being a radio wasteland.

    lostsooul Tue, 07/17/2012 - 6:12pm

what are we supposed to do now???
Does anybody care about good music anymore?

    Eric Tue, 07/17/2012 - 6:13pm

Houston is now the best example of lowest-common-denominator radio. It's tailored for those who don't know any better. The only new music you hear on any station in this town is paid for by the record companies. There is no such thing as a "Local Music Programmer" in radio anymore (outside of college or public radio).

I love the not-so-subtle implication that Christians don't know any better. Couldn't agree more. They've almost completely ruined everything else, why not radio too.

    Hello_Clarice Tue, 07/17/2012 - 6:22pm

Boo! Oh well, I pulled up 89.7 online and it sounds good so far. I guess I'll just put that in my presets where 103.7 is right now because the new format isn't for me.

    Troygood1 Tue, 07/17/2012 - 6:35pm

I knew this was about to happen-And it did. That's one preset off my list of Houston radio stations on my dial. I think Air1 sounds much like Christian Rock, which is very similar to KSBJ's NGEN Radio. EMF has decided that Air1 would be the way to go for Houston because KSBJ now has a strong presence for CCM now at 96.9 FM-Serving The SW Side with a stronger signal, and its flagship station over at 89.3 FM, serving Most of the Houston area.

    Robert-Pearland Tue, 07/17/2012 - 6:39pm

The companies who operate rock/alternative stations are missing out on a golden opportunity intergrate some classic with current rock. Think out of the box people, you dont just have to be one genre or another. My kid introduced me to bands I have heard of but never listened to. I would know the one song that made the popular, but I got to listen to other songs when she played their music in the car. It seems as if everytime we hit the classic rock stations, its the same Eagles, Van Halen, Pink Floyd and Zepplin songs. The only station I have heard play a variety of stuff, indie and classic songs that arent normally associated with the artists success is Alvin Community College radio, when I can get their weak signal on the Southeast part of pearland/friendswood. Im a Christian and I listen to some of the music, but KSBJ will always dominate that market here. This change for KHJK will be like running against the wind. Not many church goers change churches, and not many will change their Christian music station.

    Charles Tue, 07/17/2012 - 6:50pm

Sorry about the old format. But I love Air1. Welcome to Houston!

    TransAmer99 Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:24am

You might want to reconsider that. KSBJ is listener-supported (no commercials) and has been for 25 years. Running a radio station is an expensive endeavor and it wouldn't have happened if "nobody here is a big fan of that kind of music". It does bring up a point, however: because KSBJ listeners generally have a dog in the hunt, don't expect to woo them away from THAT station.

Fact of the matter is, listener numbers and advertising dollars were insufficient to support the niche market served by the former format on 103.7. That is what causes 'business decisions' like the one you feel victimized by. So, your argument appplies more to your tastes than to those favoring the Christian format.

    james o'toole Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:44am

Seriously? This is the worst kind of music ever created. I would rather listen to country music all day long that listen to this dreck....and I hate country music. Arrrgh!

    TXNewbie Tue, 08/14/2012 - 6:43pm

Sorry to the fans of the old 103.7 - it's always sad to lose a good station but I couldn't agree more that the new format is great for Christian listeners! Especially those who want something more than the usual church format of music. KSBJ is great but I know this one is going on preset #2 and it's something my kids will enjoy!

    D Romel Tue, 07/17/2012 - 7:15pm

WTH Houston?! I fell in love with this station a few months ago and it was the ONLY station besides 88.7 that I listened to during the week. What are we supposed to do now for real Adult Alternative and cool ass music we listened to when we were kids? I'm so OVER IT!!!

    cawingcrow Tue, 07/17/2012 - 7:20pm

Arrrgh--only station I could stand listening to in the mornings at all (and the best music in town)! This is really depressing.

    Terry Tue, 07/17/2012 - 7:21pm

Note to self: change radio station button from 103.7 to ...well, anything else.

    Tie Tue, 07/17/2012 - 7:23pm

This sucks, but it's business as usual in Houston. Tons of country, spanish, and talk, very little modern rock.

Here in Beaumont, Clear Channel has the one man DJ in a booth 1000 miles away for most of the stations. I miss the local morning shows. Now I listen to Dean & Rog.

Radio, like any big business is more about the $$$ than the quality.

    Ashley Tue, 07/17/2012 - 7:25pm

UGH no. I really liked this station and this truly sucks. Well, guess I'll finally be buying that iPhone adaptor for the car.

    writter Tue, 07/17/2012 - 7:30pm

I bought a new F150 back in Feb. It came with SiriusXM for 6 months free. I have only listened to Houston radio since I bought this truck to hear the Astros & Rockets. Other than that I just quit Houston radio. My one wish from Houston radio tho is that Col. St. James would get hired on to Ozzy's Boneyard or Classic Vinyl. You know the one on channel 26. He deserves MUCH better than what Houston radio is offering.

And how's that Mexican rap station going these days. The one that took over KLOL. Haven't listened to that station for even one solid sceond since I/we got screwed by that management team!

    SIRIUSXM ALL THE WAY BABY!!!

    Hello_Clarice Wed, 07/18/2012 - 7:29am

101 is doing really well and playing great music. Unlike 103.7, they are staying in my presets.

    Uncle Vernon Tue, 07/17/2012 - 7:44pm

RIP to the last good station in Houston. At least Luke Crampton's show is available for free as a podcast via iTunes.

    EmSeeDubayou Tue, 07/17/2012 - 7:51pm

Just when I thought I had found a decent station, the rug is pulled out from under me. Not a fan of Christian rock, and the Houston market will probably back me up when this station fails.

Man, I wish we had some good free radio in Houston.

    Brooke Tue, 07/17/2012 - 8:00pm

That stinks I really enjoyed this station it is hard to find a station that plays great music!

    Zephyr75080 Tue, 07/17/2012 - 8:02pm

It's not just Houston, it's everywhere. Only a handful of companies own most of the radio stations in Dallas, and what you can hear in Dallas you can hear in any city in the U.S.. All it is now is talk radio, sports radio, hispanic stations, and CHR. I'm still upset that KLOL in Houston changed a few years back.

    cxd Tue, 07/17/2012 - 8:09pm

Radio stations are sold a dime a dozen, everyday.

I was hoping smooth-jazz would return....

    I guess not.........

    BentaHellenbach Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:26am

Me too....I have a smooth jazz app on my phone that plays great music. I loved the Wave (but wouldn't listen to Donna Franklin) and KTSU. Then the Wave left and dammit Donna Franklin went to KTSU and ruined it. Memo to Donna - Michael McDonald and John Legend are NOT jazz.

Sadly, what drove me to the jazz stations in the first place was the total lack of a good rock station. And I mean like the stuff I grew up listening too PLUS the new stuff. Somebody else mentioned that bands like Led Zep and AC/DC have more than just three songs. The rock stations here are horrible. I can tolerate the Buzz for about 2 hours a day and then they do the same thing the other radio stations do - start playing the same songs all over again. Do we really need to hear that bad Peter Gabriel impression song "Somebody That I Used to Know" 10 times in a day??? (and that's just counting the 9 hours I'm at work).

I miss my CA days and KNAC. Now THERE was a great metal station.

    richeyrich Tue, 07/17/2012 - 8:11pm

I have not listened to local stations for years; always the same 10 songs over and over. Long Live Sirius !

    Nick McCorvy Tue, 07/17/2012 - 8:31pm

This really sucks, NOOOOOOO! Please find another station and bring Lost and Found on Sundays!!!!!

    D Romel Wed, 07/18/2012 - 2:21pm

Fo sho! Love Lost and Found and will now have to listen to the podcast!

    Nick McCorvy Tue, 07/17/2012 - 8:32pm

And Billy in Galvaston on Fridays!!!!!!

    Phred Tue, 07/17/2012 - 8:49pm

Absolutely horrible. There is no longer a station in Houston that I will listen to regularly, and I've live here all my life. Guess I'll have to get XM or maybe Pandora. Sucks that Houston is the worst major city in Texas for FM radio variety.

    sack_o_cats Tue, 07/17/2012 - 9:31pm

Ah, yet another station falls to the Corporate Maw.
Too bad most of you weren't around during the Golden Age of Houston Radio during the late '60s and '70s... those were the days!
There was KAUM at 96.5, and KLOL at 101.1 dueling it out for the top Rock 'N Roll station; in those days, the D.J. would be liable to play whole album sides at a time; and they would make a big deal of the Featured Album of the Week... to be played in its ENTIRETY, with *no* commercials!
This would be *unthinkable* today, what with all those Music Pirates lurking around... damn that evil Internet!

Now? Why there's the *best* in McDonald's Radio! No matter *where* you go across the country, it all sounds exactly the same! I stopped listening to commercial music stations in this town *years* ago...

    d9pieman Tue, 07/17/2012 - 9:36pm

DAMN IT! now I have to go back to 91X and 94.9 in San Diego on the net. Texas has the WORST! or non existant alternative, cutting edge stations!

    c-dub Tue, 07/24/2012 - 4:23pm

Thank you so much for sharing 94.9! I am listening to it now and it is great!

    Keith Shetterly Tue, 07/17/2012 - 9:38pm

Welcome to Korperate America, again. I know Donna MacKenzie, and there IS no better DJ.

    johnc Tue, 07/17/2012 - 9:38pm

sorry I never new it was on the air--still have 94.5 on my favorites--was it sort of like that? how did they promote?

    Eric Tue, 07/17/2012 - 10:34pm

It was slightly more cutting edge than 94.5, which is basically a rock radio station calling itself "alternative rock." 94.5's format is based on artists or music styles that peaked in the 90's. KHJK's adult alternative was a little more forward thinking, playing more well respected alternative artists for those over 30 years old.

    KayDee Tue, 07/17/2012 - 9:43pm

I almost cried when I got in the car to drive home from work. The Techno Jesus music hurt my ears immediately. It would be great if this format would move over to 106.9 or 107.5 - you don't need 2 stations that play the exact same thing! I'll miss Steve and Donna - don't be strangers to Houston airwaves for too long!

    evive Tue, 07/17/2012 - 10:14pm

I feel your pain felt, extreme sad and anger. They didn't really even gave it a chance or even promote in billboards. I wish Steve and Donna would come back too.

    moses dreary Tue, 07/17/2012 - 9:49pm

to hell with those station owner a-holes. Don't those christians have enough? I can get the same format but even better on sirius/xm's "the spectrum".

    martin gonzales Tue, 07/17/2012 - 10:08pm

    Say what, Delilah!
    Houston radio sucks.
Who is the idiot again that bought all the radio stations?
I do do not even turn the radio on anymore.

    Booooogger! Tue, 07/17/2012 - 10:10pm

    G*D DAMMIT!! (...oops)
But seriously, this was the only station that could have united the generations in MY car.

    needadecenthoustonradiostaion Mon, 07/23/2012 - 10:26pm

Totally agree with you, been in Houston 45 years now, radio went to hell in the early 90's, had to get good music from the college stations and KPFT, then 103.7 came along and could leave it there, I enjoyed turning my kids on the great old indie rock bands and they turned me on to the new indie bands that got played. We could have serious conversations about what was really good music. Rice radio is gone, KPFT only on Saturdays and Sundays. It's down to just Alvin Community College 89.7 now.

    TonyV Tue, 07/17/2012 - 10:15pm

In the car today and I heard two songs in a row (that weren't overtly Christian) that were so bad, that I googled 103.7 to find the number and call the DJ to let them know that if they played one more equally bad song, I would move them from #1 on my presets.. My google search lead me to this link... I began cursing and taking the lord's name in vain. thanks a lot, generic Christian rock station. Also, I am a devout Christian, and I greatly looked forward to my drive to mass every Sunday with Sir Luke and Lost & Found. I can't believe this happened a week before I have to take the BAR exam.. I'm crushed.

    Grrrrr Tue, 07/17/2012 - 10:18pm

This fucking sucks. 103.7 was the first place I heard The Black Keys for crying out loud! I can't even count how many great groups I discovered through this channel. Funniest thing is the last song they played was R.E.m's "End of the World". I'm actually pretty sad here.

    DavidO Tue, 07/17/2012 - 10:32pm

Just when there was hope for Houston radio...back to IPod & satellite

    sarthur Tue, 07/17/2012 - 10:32pm

To bad..this was really an awesome station. Heard songs here that I didn't hear on any other stations. I was introduced to Amos Lee on this station. Please, please, please don't take it away!!!

    Greg Tue, 07/17/2012 - 10:36pm

I'm very sad to see 103.7 go. They were the only station I could listen to for more than 10 minutes at a time. I hope this gives 94.5 The Buzz an opportunity to tweak their playlist and sound a bit more like KROQ out of LA. I was just there two weeks ago and really enjoyed listening - they had quite a bit of indie rock in their rotation, probably more than 103.7 did.. This would be a great opportunity for 94.5 The Buzz to start playing more bands like Of Monsters and Men, Arcade Fire, Young the Giant, etc and less Seether and Metallica

    Give me a break Wed, 07/18/2012 - 12:11am

I know a 94.5 The Buzz employee, they're actually doing that now. Wait til next month, you'll hear a bit of 103.7 in 94.5.

    Give me a break Wed, 07/18/2012 - 12:14am

I know a 94.5 The Buzz employee, they're actually doing that now. Wait til next month, you'll hear a bit of 103.7 in 94.5.

    GAH! Tue, 07/17/2012 - 10:51pm

Peachy. Houston really needs another Christian rock station.

    Everyone gag with me.

    JimMac Tue, 07/17/2012 - 11:19pm

Another sad day in Houston radio history... 103.7 actually had some alternative programing!

    Spectrum Tue, 07/17/2012 - 11:24pm

Well, glad that I bought the Sirius subscription for my car. Spectrum, you're now my number one station.

    evive Tue, 07/17/2012 - 11:31pm

Before they went offline they tweeted to be vote for them as Number 1 station in Houston Press Poll http://polls.houstonpress.com/polls/hou/musicawardsballot2012/

    smangit Tue, 07/17/2012 - 11:53pm

Thanks guys. Just added KACC into my custom favs on tune-in radio app for my iPhone. A really great app for the car btw

    Geokris Tue, 07/17/2012 - 11:56pm

I am really pissed off. Every time I find a station that I like in Houston, it goes off the air. First, it was 106.9 The Point, which played 80's and 90's music. Now, today, it was 103.7. I loved the format of mixing 70's through today's music. It was a great mix. I think most of the stations in Houston have too many commercials, too much talk, and not enough variety. This was the one station that got it right. I don't really want to pay for radio, but I'm seriously thinking about getting satellite radio and completely boycotting all Houston radio stations. I grew up in the D/FW area, and you can get a much better variety of stations up there. Plus, they don't disappear.

    jupiuterchild Tue, 07/17/2012 - 11:58pm

I moved back here after being gone for years and one of my worst moments was finding KLOL'S frequency in Spanish. And Moby of 96 and a half still lives in my memory to get my lazy ass up. I locked into 89.7 KACC while still driving back into town and it's all there is. Thanks so much for the tip on the KLOL website, listening right now! For other internet streamers, I highly recommend an independently owned station WKIT, The Rock of Bangor. http://www.zoneradio.com/wkit/index.shtml Owned and I believe programmed by Stephen King in Bangor, Me, he actually DID something about the lousy radio stations in his hometown, he bought one and plays what he likes. Lovers of blues driven heavy rock will find heaven there.

    jedditen Wed, 07/18/2012 - 12:47am

I wish you could listen to Spanish radio in Houston...Then you would know the kind of garbage Spanish radio give their audiences. No news, no program of real interest, no important issues for the advancement of their people. The music, well, that is their music and that's OK. but they never air a program for children, or something that people can use to better themselves.
Hispanics wanting to know the system they tune into English speaking radio stations. That how many who are unable to afford lessons to learn English, by repetition.
Recently Univision Radio launched a network service from Miami. Do programmers think that Latinos in Kingsville, Texas care about what's going on in Fla. They don't even understand each other. Different culture, idiosyncrasies, food, customs, and bunch of other things.
Now, as far as KHJK 103.7 FM, there are already too many religious radio stations or programs polluting Houstonians' minds. Enough is enough. Lack of imagination to produce something different. Still there many things than be done in radio specially now that they can use the Internet as support or a complement. Social media are already playing an important role in "broadcasting."

    jupiterchild Wed, 07/18/2012 - 12:18am

I moved back here after being gone for years and my saddest moment was finding KLOL gone. Thanks for the heads up on their new streaming site. Moby got my lazy ass up many mornings of my life both there and on 96 and a half. I had locked in 89.7 KACC while still driving back into town. I love their mix and the fact they play local artists. For streamers, try WKIT The Rock of Bangor, another rare independently owned station. http://www.zoneradio.com/wkit/index.shtml Owned and I believe programmed by Stephen King out of Bangor, Maine, he actually DID something about the lousy radio stations in his hometown, he bought the it and plays what he likes. Lovers of blues driven heavy rock will find heaven here.

    KB Wed, 07/18/2012 - 12:24am

At least the owners of KFNC kept their format. Why didn't they sold KHJK to those guys?

KRBE is also going to be a Clear Channel station soon, this is what happens when Cumulus is bankrupt.

    Rachel Fraizer Wed, 07/18/2012 - 12:35am

I'm a student at Stephen F. Austin State University, and it's a shame that when a backwoods place like Nacogdoches has much better radio selections than a major city like Houston.

    Grrrrr Wed, 07/18/2012 - 12:54am

Anyone know the closest XM station to 103.7?

    WestSideBob Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:43am

Unfortunately, XM went down the porcelain receptacle when Sirius took over. The only way to go is with your personal library on an mp3 player.

Is Donna still gonna DJ for the station after the change ?

    james o'toole Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:47am

Listen to Alt Nation. I think it's channel 36. or my favorite station XMU for indie music.

    chadbrochill69 Wed, 07/18/2012 - 1:23am

the new music is awful. not because it's christian, but because it's awful.

    JimMac Thu, 07/19/2012 - 8:13am

Yes it is! Those who can make great music with great lyrics, those who can't make christian rock.

    Religion Wed, 07/18/2012 - 3:33am

What else would you expect in Rick Perry's Texas? Fortunately, the last people still sticking to over the air radio are the same ones who are still sticking to old outdated beliefs like religion. It's a match made in heaven. Ignorance all around.

    EmSeeDubayou Wed, 07/18/2012 - 3:23pm

What a stupid omment...like him or not, Rick Perry has nothing to do with radio formats.

    Happy Camper Thu, 07/19/2012 - 12:42am

The people who will now tune into Air1, are the same people who voted him as governor.

    There ya go.

    Anonymous 74 Wed, 07/18/2012 - 4:43am

I did not know Donna was still on the air , I just got back from vacation and found two great stations in Arizona , the wolf out Williams and a listerner sponsored out of yuba city.

    Jerry Jerry Wed, 07/18/2012 - 5:38am

    .
What's up with 106.9 & 107.5 wasting airwaves by broadcasting the exact same content?
    .

    shockwave Wed, 07/18/2012 - 4:24pm

Their transmitting towers are physically on opposite sides of the city. If you are South, you listen to 107.5. If you are north, you listen 106.9 since you can hear it better than 107.5.

It's just using two stations to cover the whole Houston area is all. It doesn't improve the music wasteland in Houston, but it doesn't fill it with more toxic Talk/Tejano/Xian stations at least.

107.5 is what I wake up to. But I don't listen to it through the day as it's the same music day after day after day. If they'd mix in some modern rock too, they'd be a great station. But nobody in this city has been great for a quarter century at least.

    oahuken Wed, 07/18/2012 - 6:13am

Crap. Not good news. The old format was the very best Houston had to offer
Too too bad. Christian radio - Even JESUS is dissapointed.

    bluz1st Wed, 07/18/2012 - 7:20am

This was the only decent radio station left in Houston......satellite is becoming the only alternative.......just like television.....the local channels and the people who run them just do not get it.

    Rlrafuse Wed, 07/18/2012 - 7:28am

I truly hope that the station heads read this report and the comments made. 103.7 was my wife's and my favorite station. We were able to hear some songs that we grew up with along with the new music. This is a horrible switch - now I wish I had a car with Pandora.

    BlueHeeler Wed, 07/18/2012 - 7:32am

I don't know if anyone else will get this, but with 103.7 gone, the only other Houston radio stations I will listen to are 97.1 and 105.3 - classic and Texas country music.b it's only a matter of time before they destroy that genre too.

    B Nelson Wed, 07/18/2012 - 7:37am

I gave up on Houston radio long ago. Worst stations and least variety in the state, and that includes smaller cities like Waco, Abilene, and yes, probably even Nacogdoches. Sirius/XM is the only way to go if you live in Houston.

    Bgdc Wed, 07/18/2012 - 7:37am

Glad to see another Christian station available to listen in on! I look forward to 5 pm today.

    Mozez Wed, 07/18/2012 - 7:44am

    IPOD.....i love you

    I Hate United Wed, 07/18/2012 - 7:49am

KTSU-FM 90.9 is THE best station in Houston.....Jazz format with Soul oldies all day Fridays.

    BentaHellenbach Wed, 07/18/2012 - 9:27am

I used to listen to them all the time until Donna Franklin got there. But I will listen to Myron Anderson every Friday without fail.

    I Hate United Wed, 07/18/2012 - 1:50pm

Totally agree with you about Donna Franklin. She's working hard to ruin the station. She's totally incompetent and is trying to run off the veteran Friday DJs. If she does, KTSU will have a hard time raising money. Fridays have the highest listenership by far.

    Mansoor Wed, 07/18/2012 - 7:53am

This is horrible news of Houston radio, which has always struggled. Hopefully the programmers will see the light and bring some much needed diversity to Houston radio.

    I Hate United Wed, 07/18/2012 - 7:55am

Www.starpointradio.com if you're into Soul/R&B/Funk/Soulful House/Soulful Jazz! No playlists, rotations or commercials.

    Jo Nathan Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:11am

Donna McKenzie was the worst voice on the radio. She should of stayed on sunny 99.1. However this station was the best on the radio. Just renewed my sirus account, goodbye radio.

    RSG Wed, 07/18/2012 - 9:35am

Donna MacKenzie was great. I dunno who you listen to, but she was great. Now thanks to these idiots called Air1 I may never get to hear her again.

    JMaC Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:12am

Donna McKenzie was the worst voice on the radio. She should of stayed on sunny 99.1. However this station was the best on the radio. Just renewed my sirus account, goodbye radio.

    Middle ager Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:22am

So is this a news story or another example that the Chroniclr is about opinion? I HATED the format at 103.7. All of you who are upset, what demographic do you think it appealed to? Do you know how many listeners tuned in to 103.7 for Alternative Adult rock? Do you know how well 103.7 was able to sell ads (generate station income) with the old format? i suspect not. YOU NO NOTHING about the realities of running a radio station and selecting a format. When there is a sufficient audience for your kind of "edgy" music, it will appear more prominently on the radio.

    foodforthought Wed, 07/18/2012 - 5:54pm

You might find it interesting on how it got sold and you might also get more insight. Second is was streaming from LaPorte,TX. It was also packaged in bankruptcy. Second their marketing ( billboard promoting )might of not been up to par. But it does not mean it was not great or did not have listeners of all ages.

    bummed Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:31am

The new christian station has a prayer request line, I just requested a prayer that the format be reverted back to Adult Alternative.

    shellpat Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:25am

    Perfect!

    Gordon Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:38am

    DAMN, I loved 103.7. RIP

And Christians are cool and I love them and everything but damn, there pop music sucks!

    james o'toole Thu, 07/19/2012 - 7:08am

The words "Christian" and "Cool" should never ever be used in the same sentence.

    Jerome Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:39am

Contemporary Christianity is the bane of faithfulness. Contemporary Christian music is horrible! How can you even listen to it? It's the same sappy song done a thousand different ways, over and over and over again...

    ;) :) :) happy boy Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:41am

thanks for the effort to plant a seed in this city, the beautiful gospel, with music, the bible say :

4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God?
whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

not listened to the radio now is the time to listen when I'm driving.

    blessing

    Umm...Shut up.

    RSG Wed, 07/18/2012 - 9:36am

The fact that we are in the Bible Belt (I know it's Houston, but surrounding area counts too) have so many people complain about this change is a really bad sign for your kind.

OMG we loved the adult alt format and are just sick about the change. Steve's morning show was the bomb and we enjoyed his style.
with this change, we won't be listening to 103.7 again, that's for sure. BOOOOO KHJK BOOOOOO

    Snowman Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:51am

I made the switch to XM seven years ago. If you're looking for AAA, this is it; http://www.siriusxm.com/thespectrum

    cab Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:52am

Cities 97 on iheart in Minneapolis is the same format as this station.

    Kim2 Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:56am

    DO NOT WANT!!!!!!!

    Heinz Guderian Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:57am

Can't possibly be any worse than the previous format. What an eclectic blend of unlistenable crap from the ASCAP garbage pile.

    alsal29 Wed, 07/18/2012 - 9:03am

Alt Nation on 36 plays a lot of the newer alt stuff like Arcade Fire and Shins. The older alt rock is on Lithium 34, like Cranberries and REM, mostly stuff from the 90's.

    bones Wed, 07/18/2012 - 9:05am

Well..I guess this means no Sound Check Gig for the Shins in October at House of Blues!!!! Thanks!!!

    ???? Wed, 07/18/2012 - 9:19am

This was by FAR the best station in Houston. I guess I need to get satellite radio now. #Bummed.

    UHCOOG1 Wed, 07/18/2012 - 9:25am

ARE YOU SERIOUS? MANNNNNN.... I've been cranking this up when I do yard work in the back yard. FINALLY found a good station for a 40something year old that is not playing the tired tunes of classic rock station.

    The INHUMANITY of it...

    Jen Wed, 07/18/2012 - 9:25am

MAN..I actually liked this station. They had better programming in the afternoon. They were the 1st ones that introduced me to all the other songs by Florence & the Machine, that were not on the Top 40 stations. Great now I have to find another station to fill the void. I guess MP3 player will be playing on my way home tonight.

    guntown Wed, 07/18/2012 - 9:39am

The poor wednesday rocket scientist is going to have to find a new source of income...

I like everyone else is upset about the change. I don't have satellite radio in my car and the CD player doesn't work. 103.7 is all that I listened to. I guess i'll have to go back to crappy Houston sports radio....which in itself is currently in an upheaval and looking for a direction.

    guntown Wed, 07/18/2012 - 9:42am

And heck! What about their big concert this Friday out at the Woodlands??? I actually won tickets to that a few weeks back by calling into the radio station. Are Steve and Donna not going to be a part of that gig now???

    All a damn shame.

    RSG Wed, 07/18/2012 - 9:46am

If Jeremy Lin were to hear this news, he'd change his mind about signing with the Rockets and head on over back to NY.

    amylou Wed, 07/18/2012 - 9:48am

Praise God Almighty! We need MORE Christian music and less trash for folks to listen to!

    King Dedede Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:17am

"GACK! What a horrible way to wake up this morning - off-tone warbling of "Jeeeeeeeezus"... And I'm a Christian!"

The fact that one of the commenters is a Christian and said this, shows you how much Air1 is hated.

    Nurvana0 Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:45am

ah yes.. let's impose your tastes on everyone else.. sounds about right

    Nurvana0 Wed, 07/18/2012 - 9:49am

Internet radio is the only way to go.. I had to give up on XM a few years ago when they lost most of the stations I enjoyed.

Eschatological christians won't be happy till they ruin everything.. scientific advancement, quality of life for others, overall health of society, and even FM media consumption

    zuria Wed, 07/18/2012 - 9:50am

GACK! What a horrible way to wake up this morning - off-tone warbling of "Jeeeeeeeezus"... And I'm a Christian!

Somebody PLEASE bring back Jack-FM! San Antonio still has this format station and it's the best thing on the dial there.

Deleting 103.7 from the pre-sets. What a pity. Where in Houston now can one listen to good Adult-Alt?

Oh, hell. Just realized this means no more Luke Crampton...SOB!

    Jerome Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:20am

Ahhhh come on it's not that bad. You could listen to contemporary Christian music all day long, and essentially hear the same song ad nauseum.

    Disappointed Wed, 07/18/2012 - 9:59am

I've been listening to Houston Area rock radio since the mid seventies and don't know how many times that a station with a really good format has been converted to format which caters to a more specific demographic (e.g. Tejano, Christian, Country, etc.). It's really too bad as I enjoyed 103.7 very much...it was a breath of fresh air!

    Greg E Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:03am

Need KLJB FM Austin to feed to a Houston tower

    Bummed Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:10am

On the bright side, this will give me a chance to sample some Christian music.

Unfortunately, I really liked 103.7 the way it was.

I hope for the sake of those employed at the now-former 103.7 station that some other entity (which owns airwaves) finds that the 103.7 listener crowd is large and lucrative enough to field another station with the Indie Rock format.

    CHCH Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:10am

    Dangit!
You know who is to blame for this?
    United Airlines, I bet.

    EmSeeDubayou Wed, 07/18/2012 - 3:28pm

Nah, Obama says it was George Bush's fault.

    marcyb Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:18am

So what happened to Steve and Donna? Do they have no compete clauses in the their contracts or will they show up on other Houston-area stations? I'm a long-time fan of Donna's from back in her Bryan/College Station days.
I'll also miss listening to Lost and Found Radio on Sunday mornings. What a fantastic mix of music!

    Rocky Balboa Mon, 07/23/2012 - 8:26am

Maybe they are going to conservative talk radio on the AM dial?

    Rocky Balboa Mon, 07/23/2012 - 8:35am

Just as an idea? how weird would it be if both Donna M and Steve R joined forces with Walton and Johnson on 93.7 The Arrow. Not that would be different? would you agree?

    Nikki Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:22am

I voted for them on that http://polls.houstonpress.com/polls/hou/musicawardsballot2012/ in hopes that if they are voted the best one and they come back.

    Jessica Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:25am

Very sad. Drove home with my 103.7 intact, drove into town for a concert and it took me most of 1 song to realize what happened.

    Troygood1 Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:25am

Looking for some good sounding radio? Well, they got it in Austin. They got KGSR(AAA),103-5 Bob-FM(Adult Variety),and now, KOKE-FM(Texas Country). These stations are avalible online, or on TuneIn Radio.

    rsr72 Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:26am

What! agree, only station keeping me away from iPod, or was... I did enjoy 103.7's former format What has happened to people's musical tastes in this country?

    Anonymous5000 Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:28am

This is a big loss for Houston radio. Luke Crampton's "Lost and Found" is an awesome show that (gasp!) is actually about music. NO prank phone calls, snarky political jabs, or idiots chattering to each other. Crampton clearly loves music and it shows. Best of all, he actually tells you the name of the artist and the song he's playing. Check out his podcast.

Regarding the switch to Christian contemporary, I'd rather jab toothpicks through my eardrums than listen to that noise. I held off shelling out the dough for satellite radio for a long time, but it might be time to bite that bullet.

    Tomsfoolery Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:54am

This was the only good station in this town. I was excited to be in my car (no iPod connection), and I am miffed beyond belief. Every time there is a station I enjoy, it is ripped away. This one, though, was the best of them all...UGH!

    CNick Wed, 07/18/2012 - 11:19am

I am 55 and tired of listening to classic rock. This station gave me an opportunity to try something different and I loved it! Houston radio needs this in a bad way. I hope it comes back.

    Sad Day Wed, 07/18/2012 - 11:48am

Don't need Shazam or SoundHound on my phone any more. 103.7 was the biggest source of new music for my iPod. Really don't want to invest in Sirius...

    pacoranger Wed, 07/18/2012 - 11:53am

    Donna Mac where are you......................

    bkbirge Wed, 07/18/2012 - 12:28pm

People actually still listen to radio? With endless free mp3's out there of great public domain and independent artists giving it away, why?

    King Dedede Wed, 07/18/2012 - 1:04pm

Why do we still have movie theaters? Same question.

    Jerome Wed, 07/18/2012 - 12:30pm

The only requirement to have a chart topping Contemporary Christian hit song is including either 1) Excessive use of the word "awesome", or 2) Someone dying of cancer.

    Anonymiter Wed, 07/18/2012 - 1:51pm

After reading a few comments(can't be bothered to get through them all) I can safely say that most people share in my disappointment over this. This station made up 99% of what came out of my radio while driving, and I do a lot of driving.
The one difference I think I have from most everyone else is my lack of consolation in internet and satellite radio. I really enjoyed the local aspect of the format. The majority of the selection played was preferable, but it was the people like Steve Robison and Donna McKenzie that really rooted it all in. Sure, I can get a tailored playlist streamed to me from Pandora or find a much better station on XM, but without the likes of Luke Crampton I don't see myself caring nearly as much.
I really hope this station gets revived somehow or moved to another channel. It'll be a shame to lose it.

    the h happened Wed, 07/18/2012 - 2:13pm

Thought maybe I'd stepped off into the "Twighlight Zone" Guess I'll get upto date on my Sports courtesy of ESPN Radio and news courtesy of NPR.....maybe I'll try AM...........

    goodtymecharlie Wed, 07/18/2012 - 2:19pm

Between the Latin and Christian music stations, they out number all the rest..country, adult alternative, etc..etc.. 3 to 1 now! Bring back Rock 101 KLOL...PLEASE???????

    oeg Wed, 07/18/2012 - 3:45pm

Reading these comments makes me think there are a lot of heathens in Houston! You people wouldn't know good Godly music if it bit you. WOW...how sad are you all. Judging by what you have written, you need to listen to the new format. May God have mercy on you all.....

    foodforthought Wed, 07/18/2012 - 5:46pm

For starters you of all people should know that the creator forgives all. Second who are you to judge others that do not follow your exact beliefs. As a catholic I was thought never judge other relgions as we have the same creator. Your comment sounds like an attack and is offensive to me. Please have an understanding that what we are all going through (the ones that actually listened not just talk to talk) miss the variety of true music that came from Steve and Donna and their respected DJ's at the old 103.7 Alternative. Please watch what you say.

    Larry Wed, 07/18/2012 - 3:57pm

I just found out about this the hard way. Turned the radio on and knew immediately something was wrong. This is really bad news!! You would think that the nation's 4th largest city would have at least one halfway decent rock station. I agree w/ goodtymecharlie. Where is Moby when you need him!

    Anonyous Wed, 07/18/2012 - 4:00pm

NOOOO!!! So sad to hear this. 103.7 was my favorite station even though it faded in and out where I live.

    M1000 Wed, 07/18/2012 - 4:01pm

I have news for you guys - Jack FM was garbage from Day 1. Once upon a time, 103.7 was the bastard child of Rock 101.1 KLOL. When Houston lost its ONLY hard rock station, it was a sad day - almost as sad as when 101 KLOL lost its station to Mexican Radio. Jack FM played a lot of crap I thought was left behind in the 80s and 90s with good riddance, and played even more of the same songs over and over than the stations that have actual live DJs instead of computer operators.

In all honesty, you can blame Houston's crappy radio choices squarely on the shoulders of Clear Channel, who somehow has a near-complete monopoly on radio for this area.

    crescentbay Wed, 07/18/2012 - 4:05pm

This station made up 100% of what came out of my radio while driving. I am very disappointed by the change. I guess I will be going back to listening to my ipod.

    Igiveup Wed, 07/18/2012 - 4:07pm

Oh, for the love of Pete! I really LOVED this station and the variety on 103.7....you can't hear anything close to it in Houston - where *everything* is overplayed to death and boring. Now we won't have anything remotely cool in Houston besides Katy Perry (ew). Add to that I'm really tired of the merry-go-round of station changes. XM\Sirius totally sucks....looks like time to figure out Pandora for my car.

    shockwave Wed, 07/18/2012 - 4:10pm

Radio in Houston is utterly worthless. Take a listen sometime. 107.5 is fine if you ONLY want classic music. The Arrow is the same, with more commercials. 94.5 plays the same 20 songs so often you want to burn the station down.

Is there any station that has a mix of classic and modern music? Nothing. Not even close. There are three stations that are only halfway decent.

Everything else is a tejano station, or christian station, or talk radio, or country. Which is fine if those are what you are interested in. But if you want to hear modern rock your choices are to put up with the Buzz, or turn on an internet radio station from some other city whose radio scene doesn't suck.

    Breiter Wed, 07/18/2012 - 4:18pm

Where is the petition to bring back the only good station in Houston?

    Annoyed Wed, 07/18/2012 - 4:19pm

BOOOOOO! The only cool station in Houston. Moved here from Seattle last year and this station was similar to 103.7 the Mountain which is the best station IMHO. Good thing I have Tune In Radio on my phone but still. I really loved this station!
I turned on the radio when I got in my car and heard the same sounding stuff over and over. Yuck. Took it off my preset. And does Houston need more Christian stuff? I suppose it could be worse. It could be more Tejano garbage.

    EdBdCJ Wed, 07/18/2012 - 4:49pm

BOO. The last thing this town needs is yet ANOTHER Christian anything. Isn't it bad enough we've given up THe Summit to a televangelists?!?!? How much Christian music does one need exactly? Houston didn't used to wear this crap on its sleeve, I grew up here, left then returned to find stations like KRBE, KMJQ, 94.5 were/are playing THE EXACT same play lists as they did 10 YEARS ago. When I heard "Nervous" by Beck on 103.7 it gave me hope for the city. Now, I am deflated because, once again, we bow down to what the Christian community wants and all the rest of us simply do not exist in their eyes. SOO ANNOYING. Thank Jobs for iPod!!!!

    FREAKED!!! Wed, 07/18/2012 - 4:55pm

Ahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just tuned in for the ride home! It was like I was in the Twilight Zone! Then the DJ came on talkin' about 'awesome' this and 'awesome' that. @#$@#%! -- TOTAL BUMMER SUMMER!

    Jamal Wed, 07/18/2012 - 5:48pm

Like my brother Jerome said earlier, all you need to have a chart topping contemporary Christian song is 1) Overuse of the word 'awesome', and/or 2) Someone with cancer.

    KTRU Rice Radio Wed, 07/18/2012 - 4:59pm

Good broadcasting still very much alive in Houston.

    Rock 101 KLOL Wed, 07/18/2012 - 6:44pm

Just another reason why you should be tuning into Rock 101 KLOL online. http://www.Rock101KLOL.com Houston's on REAL Rock Station!

    J.D. Randall Wed, 07/18/2012 - 7:05pm

We all know Houston radio sucks - for years it's been decades behind every other city. But I've listened to this new station a few times in the past day and I think it's a million times better than anything else we have. NO commercials, NO repeated songs, FINALLY some songs I haven't heard 10 times in the past 12 hours by musicians that commercial radio hasn't beaten to death, and the playlist is very different than typical contemporary Christian stations like KSBJ. Just give it a chance - it can't be worse than what's on the rest of the dial!!!

    Matthew in VA Wed, 07/18/2012 - 7:09pm

When I moved from Houston, I kept the link to 103.7 because of the format, and listened to them while working on my computer. There isn't a station that is half as good as what 103.7 used to be, here. I told other people about it, and even have a 'play list' from them I use to play music on the jukebox when I'm out at the tavern. They will be missed.

    LaRue Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:18pm

If you think Houston has it bad, try being in Beaumont. Man, will I miss this station..just loved their mix of music. Even picked it up inside my office, which makes the day go better. Can't stream at work, so what's a girl to do?

    Colby Thu, 07/19/2012 - 12:34am

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    dabeav Thu, 07/19/2012 - 12:54am

stupidest thing i've heard in a while...and houston is full of stupid

    garynonymous Thu, 07/19/2012 - 7:02am

You have got to be kidding me!!!!! Every radio in my house and garage is set to 103.7 since it's inseption and now your changing?
It was the only station that played new hit's along with older hit's with no Hip Hop,Rap and or HEAVY Metal BS!! pLEASE change back to the Adult Alternative format, we don't need any more CHR!

    Rocky Balboa Thu, 07/19/2012 - 7:42am

I'm going to miss all the R-E-M that they played daily. This was the best radio station ever!Where is Johnny Bravo now?

    G Thu, 07/19/2012 - 8:30am

I never heard of this station. Did they not do any billboard advertising outside of BW8? Would have listened to it if I had known it existed. Definitely won't listen now that it is god music.

I am also one that has 12 presets with only 4 stations programmed because of the crap choices.

BTW people still listen to 104 KRBE? I quit that station years ago when I graduated from HS.

    K_Kimsey Thu, 07/19/2012 - 1:59pm

This is terrible! I loved this station, and Lost and Found on Sundays was my absolute favorite! Sad day for Houston radio!!

Pissed off in Spring Branch Thu, 07/19/2012 - 3:11pm

I am Christian, but this is some series BS! Where's Donna Mack we love her? Cumlis is as bad as clear channel!

    Charlene Thu, 07/19/2012 - 3:16pm

I hope someone of power reads all these replies from disappointed listeners. That was a niche in the market that is desperately underserved. BEST variety of cool and interesting music on the radio, and now it's gone. I switched my house radio to 96.5 yesterday and it wasn't an hour before I heard a particular song a 2nd time. PLEASE!!!!

    annette Thu, 07/19/2012 - 9:55pm

    mo Fri, 07/20/2012 - 11:55am

WOW! I was just spreading the word on this great station. Also I enjoyed the broadcast of Lost and Found on Sunday mornings. If I win the lottery my first business venture will be hiring Steve Robinson and buying a radio station. Thank you Steve for venturing from the norm!

    NashHouston Fri, 07/20/2012 - 2:38pm

When I moved here from Nashville two years ago, this was the first station I came across that I could listen to continuously. While I always thought there was room for improvement, this was the ONLY station that did not wear out the same ole, same old, classic rock songs. Nashville has an Adult Alternative station called Lighting 100, and it was similar to 103.7, but edgier..less commerical.

As I drove home from work recently, I was absolutely shocked to hear this new format. Not good...not good, at all. In fact, ridiculously bad. Really.. who will listen to this rubbish!!?? There is already a Christian "rock" station, while it does has a few good songs every now and then, most of it is just BAD, BAD, BAD music, with virtually the same guitar lick throughout to show that they are "cool, man." I went up and dial the radio dial several times with zero success of finding anything I could stick with.

So... other than purchasing satellite radio or an Ipad, what's a girl to do???? Surely the 4th largest city in AMERICA, that has such cool everything else can manage to put out a radio station with something beyond this crap that we are now stuck with.

    bcl Fri, 07/20/2012 - 5:15pm

PLEASE COME BACK!!! This format is the only thing that has helped me transition from Southern California to Houston! This format is much needed in HOUSTON - it is the 4th largest city in the country and we need this!! PLEASE COME BACK! I am devastated!!!!

    Rocky Balboa Sat, 07/21/2012 - 8:03am

I and I'm sure dozens of other feel the same way. Yes, it is a big loss but over time you will get through the darkness. Be strong, you are not alone. R-E-M and Train forever.

    HCM Fri, 07/20/2012 - 5:36pm

WHAT A LOST.... 103.7 was the best radio in H-town.... religious radio sucks....

    Tiffany Sat, 07/21/2012 - 11:57am

I'm not happy about the format change. I was a huge fan of this station because of the variety of music they played. I loved that they were playing more indie artists as well as singer song-writers and 80s/90s music. This was the closest thing to Austin' 101X and now it's gone. Maybe I need to switch to satelite radio.

    Brian C Sat, 07/21/2012 - 3:43pm

Wow, went to listen to the best station in Houston today and put the speakers on out near the pool and poof!, gone. Christian radio, really? Clear Channel's model has ruined radio in Texas. San Antonio has nothing unless you like 24/7 Billy Joel and BeeGees KONO 101.1 and the Jack station hasn't played a new artist forever. KGSR is now the only remaining station in Texas that truly is fresh, original that has variety and intelligence. What do we have to do to get Adult Alternative back to Houston. KPFT gets a little too political...just want to hear fresh new music and jam on a few diverse old tunes. No formula, just good music of all kinds.

    Rocky Balboa Wed, 07/25/2012 - 8:08am

You know that this station was not a Clear Channel property? Just so you know it was a Cumulus Media station and not Clear Channel. Just wanted to know that because bashing Clear Channel when they had not a thing to do this, well; it makes you look bad.

    h-town_harry Sun, 07/22/2012 - 9:07am

At least it's not another tejano station!

    Jill F Sun, 07/22/2012 - 6:47pm

Boo! Like we need another Christian Rock station. I don't know where I can tune in anymore.

    Michael Maki Mon, 07/23/2012 - 12:44pm

This is the worst decision ever. Now we have classic rock, top 40, spanish radio, country, and now another Christian station. Don't they know God listens to the other Christian station? There was finally a staton which compared to 93.1 WXRT in Chicago, now it's all crap. Back to AM for this guy.

    Buddy Mon, 07/23/2012 - 4:00pm

This is another reason why radio sucks, especially in Houston.

I have purged Satan's radio Air 1 from my radio presets.

    JohninPrague Mon, 07/23/2012 - 6:52pm

Ok, I'm from Chicago and a shout out to Michael Maki on the WXRT reference! They've been kickin' it strong for 30 years, and he's right, noticed the programming similarity, nice mix of indie, alternative, you name it, and Luke on Sunday morning was awesome.

Now the crappy stuff, get home from Europe last Friday, turn on my car radio and think, WHAT THE **** are they playing this crap for? KHJK WAS the ONLY station in this musically bankrupt town that I ever listened to. Even my teenage daughters are upset.

I am seriously pissed, REALLY?? Only thing we didn't need was another teen pop, country or christian station. Just sickening!

    Q's MAD!

    AnonymousMandyk Mon, 07/23/2012 - 7:51pm

Boo! Hiss! This is horrible news. When I realized *with utter horror* what I was listening to, I wanted to cry. "Lost and Found" was brilliant. This was the only station I listened to. I am so disappointed.

    toricig Mon, 07/23/2012 - 8:19pm

What is wrong with this town? Houston music sux! 103.7 was the ONLY good music around. We have enough Christian BS to choke a horse and anything Clear Channel bites. So now we have 3 choices, Christian, Spanish and sucks. I wish I lived in Austin...

this makes me so sad. shocking. how is this possible? felt sick this morning when I had to change back to 104 on my presets.

    kensani Tue, 07/24/2012 - 11:33am

unbelievable! well this definitely means im not gonna listen to the radio again! any stations out there similar to it?

    Rocky Balboa Tue, 07/24/2012 - 12:58pm

What an absolutely devastating blow to not only Houston, but the nation. I have been in shock for over 2 weeks now.

    birdnerd87 Tue, 07/24/2012 - 3:32pm

One of the few rock stations I could get in beaumont... now I am stuck with iheartradio b.s. with big dog 106. Guess it's internet radio from now on or maybe I will have to pay for some satellite :(

    madison1960 Tue, 07/24/2012 - 10:09pm

My 80 year mother listened to this station. The only station we could listen to together. I'm disguted by this. Did we have a voice in this? Of course not. It's all about the almighty dollar. Clear channel needs to get a clue. This was a great station. I got turned on to artist I wouldn't have, because of air time the artist had on this station. Well, I hope other radio station's are listening to us. We can get our music elsewhere.

    Rocky Balboa Wed, 07/25/2012 - 7:54am

With due respect. What does Clear Channel have to do with this? If you are doing a knee jerk thinking that this was a Clear Channel station, think again because it was not. Cumulus Media was the owner, same people who own 104.1 KRBE. Perhaps you need to get a clue.

    the jerk Wed, 07/25/2012 - 10:41pm

I am still in withdrawl myself. I listened to this station from Beaumont and like many others, I saw the potential here. A radio station that played a variety for gen x'ers and had more than 15 songs on its playlist.

    lora Thu, 07/26/2012 - 4:10pm

well there is a Jack format -in Victoria, TX 98.7fm....good luck if you can pick that up. I know that the KHJK listeners weren't the ones to fill out forms or carry around an arbitron meter so their ratings were very low - which made for low rates - which meant a lower income.

    new houstonian Thu, 07/26/2012 - 11:17pm

I guess I am going to have to go back to streaming KGSR in Austin through my phone in my car. What a pain. I will miss this station. Houston radio is dead to me now.

    Elizabeth Sun, 07/29/2012 - 12:48pm

What the hell is this! I love 103.7 it absolutely sickens me that thus station no longer plays the good alternative/indie music. It is the only station my boyfriend and I listen too when we are together. I have no interest in Christian music, what the hell! I just don't understand why you would play Christian music I don't. I think this completely stupid and a very retarded idea. Houston already has a Christian station, and damn we don't need another.

    Rocky Balboa Mon, 07/30/2012 - 7:53am

There is no reason to be so hostile! This a devastating blow to the Houston community, but many are slowing but surely coming to the realization, that our beloved Jack FM is not coming back any time soon. Stay strong soldier, we feel your pain and your hostility.

    AI student Mon, 07/30/2012 - 1:09pm

pretty sad day to find that 103.7 was switched. past few days I been going "wtf" and finely today I came online to find out what exactly.
I was very disappointed to to hear my fav and only radio station that I listened to being replaced by the horrible christian station air1 or what ever the hell it is.

We should do a sig thing to see if enough people sign it, maybe could get the radio station OUR 103.7 back.

    rip 103.7

    Rayray Mon, 07/30/2012 - 9:10pm

I will truly miss this radio station. It's been decades that I could listen to a radio station without wanting to change the channel after three songs! Thankfully Lost and Found can be heard on podcast.

What will happen to Dr. Luke, Lost and Found? :(

    BikePrincess Mon, 07/30/2012 - 10:14pm

It saddens ms that this format has changed. I really enjoyed the old format. RIP and goodbye 103.7 from my programmed stations.

    lalaluu Tue, 07/31/2012 - 3:33pm

I saw Mayor Parker on the Colbert Report, and I thought she represented Houston really well. What she failed to mention is that our radio stations universally suck. Any chance the city can attract decent radio ala Dallas or Austin? Or are we stuck in this weird limbo forever? Next car I get WILL have a jack for an MP3 player...!

    Now What Tue, 07/31/2012 - 10:09pm

103.7 went from my favorite to being deleted off pre-set. Sucks. Time for satellite since there's nothing even close to what 103.7 offered.

    AnonymousS Wed, 08/01/2012 - 10:14pm

The Houston music scene is shameful. Seriously.

    Tmitch Thu, 08/02/2012 - 4:42pm

The problem here is not that the station changed to a Christian format. The problem is that it CHANGED. Period. The best station in Houston, gone. I have Sirius and listened to this station first.

I, myself, as a Christian, DO like the music on the new format. I just wish it had went on another station and not replaced this one. They never, ever, promoted the station. The other stations talk too much, play the SAME songs every hour, and some are too racy for little ears in the morning.

Can't we, in this enormous city of about 6 MILLION people, have both formats?? *smh*

    Tom Smith Sat, 08/04/2012 - 3:53pm

I simply change the station. Refuse to listen.

    Holly Sun, 08/05/2012 - 7:50am

Thank you ! Found your station yesterday- and I am greatly enjoying it !

    Keri Sun, 08/05/2012 - 3:38pm

At least you guys live in Houston and have other stations to listen to. I'm in the Beaumont area and KHJK was the ONLY alternative rock / indie station. There is ONE rock station that seems to play basically Led Zeppelin & Metallica over and over again, and one pop station that plays hip-hop and top 40 only. We already have PLENTY of Christian Rock stations. A VERY SAD DAY INDEED - All radios here are now useless and music was a big part of our everyday lives. :(

    J Miller Thu, 08/16/2012 - 6:27pm

I couldn't be more happier about this!! We NEED more stations out there like KSBJ and such! Good move, Houston

    Anonymous1 Sun, 08/19/2012 - 10:55am

After being in Houston for 10 years and listening to the radio noticing that with a population of the 4th largest city in America the quality of the stations here is one of the worst in the developed countries, 103.7 KHJK Jack FM provided a relief from the stale 10 song an hour retoric played in the majority of the airwaves. It was a necessary requirement for me to reprogram my radio from 103.7 to white noise. why with the range of stations from 88-108 does the christian radio have to override an existing station which provided a range of music? .in the words of elton john.. It's sad, so sad
    It's a sad, sad situation
And it's getting more and more absurd
    It's sad, so sad..

    Dianna Wed, 11/28/2012 - 11:54am

I agree with everyone else. 103.7 was the best station on air in this boring world of radio in southeast TX. I am Christian but do not care for Christian music. I listened on the radio as well as the internet it will be greatly missed.

    infidelforlife Sat, 12/01/2012 - 10:20pm

What I find sad is all of the negative comments above about Christian Music. I agree, in a stereotype fashion, Christian music can be boring. But the new Hard Rock Christian music being produced today not only rivals modern rock but brings important messages regarding todays world events in revelation to the blindness we all experience in day to day life. 103.7 is also listner supported so enough said.
