Sara's weekend picks

    Friday (May 1):

Drop Trio makes a rare appearance. 10 p.m. at Avant Garden. This is just six days before former Houstonian/current Austinonion Ian Varley (Drop Trio's keyboardist) comes back to town on keys with Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears at Walter's. Super excited about that show after seeing this video, in which Varley also appears:

Dead Roses reunion show at Notsuoh.

    • Haven't heard much from earnest pop-rock band Savoy Special since I wrote about it a few years ago. We bonded over our shared love of toad the wet sprocket, because what else would an earnest pop-rock band (and an earnest 16-year-old from the suburbs) love more than toad the wet sprocket? The band plays Rudyard's with the Small Sounds.

I Am Mesmer opens for Sleepytime Gorilla Museum at Walter's, if that's on your to-do list.

Clouseaux opens for Tito and Tarantula 10 p.m. at the Continental Club. Doesn't "Swine Flu Mania" sound like the title of a really swampy Clouseaux song?

    Saturday (May 2):

    • Jazz singer Kristine Mills celebrates the release of her new album, Bossanovafied, at 7 p.m. at the Mucky Duck.

    • Two bands on opposite ends of Americana: The Literary Greats makes pretty, modern, Americana-pop and the Sideshow Tramps is old-school with washboards and revival-speak. Both at Mango's.

    Sunday (May 3):

    • Another Jandek show? Another Jandek show? This time with MV + EE at Diverseworks. Anyone betting on a power-pop show this time around? Maybe lounge?
