Versecity rocks hard at the Hard Rock

Power pop-rock band Versecity bested several Houston acts at the three-week Hard Rock Cafe Ambassadors of Rock Battle of the Bands. Now, it's off to London to jam alongside Bruce Springsteen, the Killers, Neil Young and Dave Matthews.

Hopefully. Versecity is now vying against acts from all over the country for a shot at the big show. Six regional winners will be selected to, and video of their performances will be posted online. Public voting will decide who goes to London.

The Versecity bunch is now gunning for London. The Versecity bunch is now gunning for London.

Versecity has a slick, modern sound that's better than much of what litters radio. It's propelled by the wailing vocals and cover-boy charm of frontman Micah Sharai Walker. The group's first disc, Epic Sunrise, was recently released and shwocases strong musicianship and catchy songwriting. A video is also due soon.

Walker answered a few questions last night/this morning about Versecity's win and its origins:

What do you think gave you the edge over the other bands?

I think a combination of youth/skill/performance/crowd participation -- and better original songs.

What do you think you could have done better?

After losing my voice completely early in the week, I was only about 80-percent Wednesday night for the finals. Other than that, we won, and I hate dwelling on any negatives, anyways!

How does the band describe its sound?

Rock/soul with a POP! We want to inspire people as well as give you something to rock out to while you’re speeding down the highway. Don’t speed. I don’t want to hear any stories about Versecity related accidents.

Tell us about the video that's coming soon.

We are about 90-percent finished shooting a music video with director Kyle Lamar for the song Ambitious Eyes. The song was Kyle’s choice for the video, but we all agreed it would be cool. It's based around a house party and with a sort of cat-n-mouse chase. We are going to finish shooting the final scenes within the next three weeks, and the video should be finished by late May, early June.

So you're onstage in London, where no on has heard of you. How do you get through it?

I’ve actually been in a slightly similar situation when my father, Maston Walker, and myself opened for the Moody Blues at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion when I was 18. It’s one of those situations where you are completely prepared and ready, so any nervousness turns into pure adrenaline. All you can do is go out and put on the show of your life.

Tell us about the name of the group -- and the odd spelling.

Versecity (Vur-si-tee) comes from the words university, diversity and versatility. These were words that came to mind when we were trying to think of a name. The band was started on campus at the Uni-versity of Houston, and we are a mixed group of races -- white, black, Latino, Jewish) which added the word di-versity. We felt because of all our different backgrounds in music, and the fact that somehow we all came together, our sound had a lot of versatility.

Who's responsible for the imaging and styling?

Umm, I would say for the most part myself. All the guys, except (guitarist) Marcus Edwards, are always wearing my outfits for our photo shoots and asking for style opinions. I even actually gave Nelson Baradat his Mohawk myself with my personal clippers.

    Coolest other band in Houston.

This is hard to say, because I recently heard they were talking down on us -- but I think the boys of Thee Armada put on one of the best shows in Houston.
