Win Neko Case tickets

I'm still reeling from last week's Swell Season concert, but here comes another that I've been looking forward to my whole life (or a couple of years, same thing): Neko Case!

Case's Middle Cyclone is one of those albums I devoured and memorized whole in about a week. I listened over and over until I was listening to it when there was no music playing. I love this album.

She's playing Warehouse Live Sunday night. Tickets are $22, but we have one pair to give away. Comment with your favorite album of 2009 to enter. I'll pick a winner 3 p.m. Friday.

    Have to agree with Teeny

    Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca

    Honeytoast456 Wed, 11/18/2009 - 11:55am

Well, I don't think any albums this year are better than Bon Iver's "For Emma," but I am really enjoying Paramore's "Brand New Eyes."

    RyanM Wed, 11/18/2009 - 12:03pm

I'm going to go with Them Crooked Vultures - Self titled. I can't think of any CD I waited so long for and was not disappointed at all.

    maxsch Wed, 11/18/2009 - 12:05pm

    M. Ward's Hold Time is mighty fine!

    mrshl Wed, 11/18/2009 - 12:15pm

I'm afraid my answer is also Bitte Orca.

    2nd - Them Crooked Vultures
3rd - Surfer Blood's Astrocoast (with thanks to Chris Ryan for bringing them to my attention).

    Bobby Wed, 11/18/2009 - 12:42pm

I'm sure I could qualify it if I really sat down and tried, but "Middle Cyclone" totally tops my list for '09. This will be my third time seeing her this year, and she is brilliant and fantastic.

I also really loved the under-appreciated Yeah Yeah Yeah's disc, "It's Blitz!" and Lightning Dust's "Infinite Light."

    Carol911 Wed, 11/18/2009 - 1:13pm

I really liked Pearl Jam's "Backspacer" amazing.

    Mystic Thought Wed, 11/18/2009 - 1:41pm

Grizzly Bear's Veckatemist is definitely my favorite. I loved their previous albums, but they really took it to a whole new level on this one. It's already one of my favorite albums, possibly ever, and skyrocketed them to one of my favorite bands. I had a chance to see them live in Austin at their ACL aftershow and they didn't disappoint in that setting either.

Hmmm, decisions, decisions. I'm gonna go with Peter Bjorn and John's "Living Thing" as my absolute first, Why?'s "Eskimo Snow", and then the Modest Mouse EP "No One's First and You're Next".

    TheGoodOlBoy Wed, 11/18/2009 - 4:04pm

I have to say that I was blown away with my first listen of Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavillion. There were many albums that found a way into my collection in '09, but this one has made a lasting impact:)

    lamarka Wed, 11/18/2009 - 6:39pm

Hold Time from M Ward is probably my favorite as a whole. Although not comparable, I enjoy many songs on Merriweather Post Pavilion.

    stjnky Wed, 11/18/2009 - 7:08pm

    Metric - Fantasies

    DiegoP Wed, 11/18/2009 - 8:49pm

    Cryptacize - Mythomania

    or

Experimental Dental School - Forest Field

    Matt Wed, 11/18/2009 - 9:45pm

Since some people already listed my favorites, veckatimest and merriweather post pavillion, I'll be original and say - 'Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix' by Phoenix. They're at the top of their game on this album.

    Ben Wed, 11/18/2009 - 10:01pm

no idea what my favorite is, but The Pains of Being Pure at Heart put out a good record

    Lesley Thu, 11/19/2009 - 9:38am

John Vanderslice 'Romanian Names'. easily my favorite of the year.

    brandonmoeller Thu, 11/19/2009 - 11:39am

Wilco (The Album) or Neko Case Middle Cyclone (that's the correct answer, right?!?)

    CrazyWyles Thu, 11/19/2009 - 12:02pm

I'd have to go with "Lungs" by Florence and the Machine. I heard a single long before the album release and thought "this is the best song I've ever heard." When the album appeared I found four songs that were better than that first one I heard. Truly amazing. Pay close attention to "Howl." Much love

    dollhouse26 Thu, 11/19/2009 - 3:13pm

    I also loved "It's Blitz!"

    cram oteusnam Thu, 11/19/2009 - 3:26pm

My Maudlin Career by Camera Obscura continues to be one of my favorites!

    the_birds Thu, 11/19/2009 - 4:34pm

    Definitely one of the following...

    Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Florence + the Machine - Lungs
    Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
    Black Gold - Rush
    Metric - Fantasies
The Raveonettes - In and Out of Control
The Big Pink - A Brief History of Love
Ida Maria - Fortress Around My Heart (really last year) but US release is this year, and it could win both years!

Mentions to Camera Obscura, Pains, Late of the Pier, YYY's, the XX (wow), Charlotte Hatherley, Fanfarlo, Editors, Mumford and Sons, and to you 29-95ers who have shocked me with your decent knowledge of indie music!

    Matt Thu, 11/19/2009 - 7:54pm

I wanted to include The Big Pink's album too but I thought no one had heard of them. Everytime I introduce their album to my friends they love it! Camera Obscura's album was also awesome. Heartbreaking and sweet. Good taste!

    JasonBuxton Fri, 11/20/2009 - 1:58pm

    Wilco the album.

    rad.

    samic Fri, 11/20/2009 - 2:50pm

A Fine Time by Chase Hamblin = )

    Ceez Fri, 11/20/2009 - 3:11pm

Compilation Album: Cazumbi- African Sixties Garage, although 60's garage comps have flooded the market, this one is great. It's not too varied and doesn't sound redundant.

Tribute Album: El Michels Affair- Enter the 37th Chamber, great renditions and tributes of Wu- Tan classics performed by Daptone artists and other, I get bored with Instrumentals, but this was entertaining.

New Album: Tie between Neko Case- Middle Cyclone, her voice goes through lead, and melodies don't stop. I fell in love with her B side My 63' and rank Deep Red Bells as one of my favs, but The pharoahs takes the prize. The Reigning Sound- Love and Curses, these folks have been rocking for some years and there albums are damn near close to the energy they bring on stage, very forward very standard, but very rock n roll.

    smarch Fri, 11/20/2009 - 3:07pm

I really love Middle Cyclone! Neko has really come into with her penned songs. I enjoyed this more then Fox Confessor

    Sara Cress Fri, 11/20/2009 - 5:21pm

The winner of the tickets, chosen randomly, is dollhouse26. Now, continue talking about your favorite albums of the year.
