Miracles can happen. That's the sentiment Norma Zenteno's family is holding onto as she fights for her life in a local hospital.
Zenteno's sister-in-law, Gloria Zenteno, told me this morning it's been "touch and go" over the last several hours. She showed some signs of improvement in the wee hours of the morning.
"So many people love her, in Houston and the community," Gloria said. "She has such a great heart. We're hoping for a miracle."
Zenteno, one of Houston’s most enduring performers, was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer earlier this year. She started chemotherapy this month, but her kidneys started shutting down Wednesday. She went into cardiac arrest early Thursday morning but was resuscitated.
A benefit is still planned for 3-8 p.m. Sunday at SRO's Sports Bar & Café, 444 Northwest Mall. Performers include David De La Garza, Norma Zenteno Band, Mitch Jacob’s Band, Zydeco Dots, Sancho & the Love Tones. There will be silent auction items, T-shirts and more to benefit Zenteno.
The Norma Zenteno Band performed their regular Thursday gig at Sambuca and dedicated it to their sister.
