This neighborhood fixture has sweetened the lives of Montrose-area residents for more than a decade, making doughnuts and pastries the old-fashioned way -- with a large deep fryer and the help of chopsticks to flip them over. Regular glazed doughnuts are pure, melt-in-your-mouth confections. But the blue ribbon goes to the buttermilk-powdered, sugar-cake doughnuts. With a crispy sugar coating and bits of apples inside, the apple fritter is a gratifying cholesterol-laden treat. Try, too, meaty, handmade kolaches. Cash and checks only.
