Here's the thing: The chow at El Tiempo is outstanding --deliciously charred fajitas, pillowy flour tacos, amazing salsa. The margaritas are potent and tasty, which is a rare combination. But it's expensive. Like, way expensive. Like, 22 bucks for a half-pound of fajitas expensive.
The food is great, the prices average for the area, but DO NOT go with a group, the waiters will pad the alcohol portion of the bill, then shrug when you call them on it, happened once to me on MY birthday, from then on I order from the bar when eating with a large group there...funny, the bartender told me I'm not the only one that does that....
I do think their prices too high, but I have found their lunch menu prices to be pretty good and they offer you a lot of options. Biggest lunch menu that I've ever come across. Sunday afternoons are usually a nice time to go. Well, I can only say that for sure about the one on Washington.
Although I will add that I do really miss the location on Katy Freeway...it was the best!
Love El Tiempo and miss it so much! We always love to get the melon midori margaritas with the fajitas (for one) and lobster tail (ala carte) to split with extra rice and beans. It's plenty for both of us and helps a little bit with the price..
Good food but way too expensive....Too many other good Tex-Mex choices with better prices here in Houston.
This place is outrageously expensive and definitely NOT worth the prices. Our food was really sub-par, beans served stone cold, chewy cheese enchiladas light on the cheese, the old Ninfa's queso, which was at best, nostalgic. And the one on Washington is DARK and GLOOMY, even on a bright Saturday at lunch time. This one is X'd off my list.
Awesome food and great drinks (though the drinks aren't as strong as they used to be). Always a treat for out of towners. It's pricey for Mexican food for sure, but where else can you get lump crab quesadillas and a grill of lobster, quail, jalapeno sausage and fajitas?
Not at Chuy's, lol.
El Tiempo is well worth the price, for the great taste and atmosphere. You all should stay at Taco Cabana if you want cheap quality.

Ann, I guess you just don't realize how many choices their are in Houston for Tex-Mex that are better and cheaper.....
My business partner used to drag me here. We only were able to get a table once. Usually, we ended up standing around with drinks in hand, yelling at each other over the noise caused by the shoulder-to-shoulder, standing room only crowd. The margaritas were fantastic, as was the food, but the prices were WAY out of line.
I dont understand the prices here and why people continue to pay them when we have so many other great AFFORDABLE Mexican restaurants here.
I was thinking the same thing! Why pay the ridiculous prices when there are so many other's that are just as good, if not better, El Tiempo's food & margaritas. The Lorenzo's do it again. :(
