3 locations, including Downtown, Chinatown and Sugar Land
Dependable Vietnamese fare served in the speed of sound in a casual yet elegant setting. Huge menu offers its share of exotic fare. The "peppered'' dishes are outstanding and Kim Son's noodle bowls boast bulging portions.
Vibe: Could be better if the greeters didn't feel compelled (who knows why?) to segregrate the Vietnamese patrons from the non-Vietnamese diners.
Alison Cook says: Purists turn up their nose at the Vietnamese restaurant for being overly Americanized; others just can't get enough of the sautéed crab with black-pepper sauce. Good dim sum at the Stafford location; arrive early before the rush and service slack off. Sleek, simple interior.
Why do so many here go on and on about a location " presumably" on Westheimer that does no exist anymore?
Good grief, how bizarre. The Westheimer location is closed people, get counselling if needed or talk to close friend, it's not coming back.
Wish it was as goodas it was in the 80's and 90's!!! Too chainish now. Try Le Viet on Westheimer near Kirkwood or Vietnam Coast on Hillcroft just south of Westheimer. Its not Sugar Land its in Stafford.
since you posted it 3 times. I'll ask 3 times, where is Westheimers, where is Westheimers, where is Westheimers?
There use to be one near the corner of Westheimer and Hilcroft but since been torn down and Raising Cane's sitting at that location.
I remember it well, used to go there regularly for lunch. Couldn't understand why they closed, they were standing room only at lunchtime. Although some days at dinner hours you could hear a pin drop. Methinks they were offered a ridiculous amount of money to sell the property and they took it.
Tons of dining places on Westheimer between the loop and the beltway, which might mean it's become more difficult to compete there. Surprising how many legendary places folded over recent years, and we took them for granted until they're gone...
Pino's
Old San Francisco Steak House
That '50s place that used to be next door to the Landry's at Fondren/Westheimer intersection. Can't remember the name, it was a Prince's Hamburgers before it was torn down.
Fazoli's (I know, it was like a low-rent Olive Garden with a drive-thru window but I liked it).
Doesn't matter now, moved away from Houston about five years ago to life in the slow lane. Still miss the great dining options that endure today. Stop by Shawarma King for a chicken tawook and say hi to Sammy for me...
My family ate at the one on Westheimers for many years, even though we didn't live in Houston. Now I've been living in Houston for 8 years and eat at the Jefferson location. Kim Son makes the best fried rice ever! The Vietnamese Fajitas, Black Pepper Crab/Shrimp, and Stuffed Chicken Wings are truly unique delicacies!!

go to Mai's instead
Dim sum is the only reason to go to the Stafford location. The place does smell a bit fishy! That's why a can't talk my parents into eating here. Maybe they don't clean the big fish tanks on a regular basis.....
Americanized is good, insuring Kim Son's continued success as one of Houston's most popular Asian diners. Never had a bad meal there, service always good.
