LA Bar, the latest concept from the folks behind Ragin’ Cajun, has opened next door to the original restaurant. While the new restaurant is more elegant than its counter-service cousins, it doesn’t stray far from its Cajun/creole roots.

In fact, much of the menu is the same. The differences: Grilled dishes get fancier sauces and sides. There’s the addition of some high-end appetizers such as barbecue shrimp and char grilled oysters. Don’t worry, however, crowd favorites such as po’boys and gumbo are available, you’ll just pay a bit more. Take the hot Boudin link. It’s $5.49 at the Ragin’ Cajun vs. $6 for the LA Bar.

So, cher, you just have to ask yourself, ‘do I want the fais do do that is Ragin’ Cajun or do I want to pay a couple of extra dollars for a relaxed, indulgent experience?’

My husband and I and two friends went to LA Bar on Saturday night and were extremely disappointed with the quality of the meals. I will give kudos where deserved - the grilled oysters were absolutely to die for! Unfortunately, they were not enough to carry the rest of the meal. I had the Mahi-Mahi salad. When it came, it was so overcooked, it was the consistency of rubber, luke warm and awful. I sent it back. The replacement was warmer, but still over-cooked. My husband ordered the grilled shrimp dinner with onion rings. He got five medium sized shrimp and five onion rings. For a $15-$20 entree, that was very disappointing. Our friend got the mixed fried oysters/shrimp - again, very small offerings, small quanties and a whopping five onion rings on his plate, too. And, finally, our other friend ordered the crab cakes which was a lot more cake filler than crab. So, all in all, it was a most disappointing meal, especially considering the restaurant pedigree of the owners. We will not be going back unless it's to sit at the bar and order the grilled oysters. Did not live up to our expectations in the least.

Ohh thanks for this feedback. I was just thinking to check this cuisine I had seen on the news and the photos seemed so appreciable that made me one's mouth water.
