You might think seafood when you think of the island, but our thoughts turn to enchiladas and the Original Mexican Cafe. The kitchen turns out hand-made Tex-Mex specialties using only the freshest ingredients. And we wouldn't kid about this: the best bread pudding east of Louisiana.
Vibe: Like walking into an old friend's home.
I've never understood why so many people rave about the Original. The two times I ate there, the staff was rude and unattentive, the food was bland, and the atmosphere left a lot to be desired (unless you enjoy eating in a brightly lit dinning room devoid of any decoration). If you want a truly authentic Mexican meal, try Gorditas on the Seawall. Hands down, one of the best on the Island. The fajitas are to die for, and the savory enchiladas liven the taste buds.
Was unimpressed by OMC. Not bad. Just not that good.
Obviously, competition has a lot to do with this list. The Original is mediocre at best...nowhere near the caliber of any of the other resteraunts on this list....with perhaps the exception of Taqueria Arandas....If you are going to Galveston, Hit Salsas -- unless of course you enjoy spending hours rushing to the restroom....
I don't want to get in a pissing war here, but Salsa? Seriously. My lists are determined by a lot of things. History, atmosphere, food, vibe. Salsa!?!?! No. Never. Not even if I was starving.
