The sun never shines on these five favorites that can be found in Houston’s 60 blocks of tunnels:
You need to know only two things about this tiny spot. Stay away from the bagels. Stick to the buttery cookies (a favorite afternoon snack if you’re to believe the lines) and the Cinnamon Coffeecake Muffins. Very acceptable coffee.

I love the pluck of this local burger joint, which features a popular underground “patio.” Lines can be long at prime time — 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. — but Becks does serve the best burger in the tunnels. The grilled veggie plates are a tremendously good non-sandwich option.

Super chic homegrown mini-chain has a simple menu: salad, soups and wraps. That allows Salata to put its focus on serving the freshest ingredients, including its signature dressings. There are four locations downtown; three in the tunnels.

This spot makes the list for its seared tuna sandwich alone. The menu is short — hamburger, pulled pork, mushroom, chicken and tuna — but there are many customizing options for its lunch-size (read that small) sandwiches. A little pricey and a bit messy for eating at your desk, but we still love it.
600 Travis (in the Chase Tower), 713-228-3508
Creole/Cajun fare such as jambalaya, gumbo and catfish are served up cafeteria-style, assuring bankers, administrative assistants and cubicle jockeys can all get back to their jobs in 45 minutes. Try the rich red beans and rice with giant chunk of jalapeño cornbread. (Just know you may need a nap afterwards.)
