Houston, what are you waiting for?

When it comes to dining, here is what is in store for 2013:

    • Chris Leung, a pastry chef who has worked in some of the city’s best kitchens, plans to open a new concept in ice cream shops in the spring. Located at 5211 in the Hanover Rice Village development, Cloud 10 Creamery will be the first retail store for Leung and his partner, Christopher Balat. Creating desserts such as apple cider and honey sorbet and roasted banana and cinnamon ice cream, Cloud 10 currently services restaurants such as Underbelly, Roost and Sundance Cinemas. Find out more at cloud10creamery.com.
    • And speaking of dessert shops, Sloan’s Ice Cream is expected to open its first Houston franchise (or two) this year. The first Sloan’s opened in Palm Beach, Fla., in 1999 and quickly became popular for its fanciful flavors (Circus, Cookie Monster and Coconut Storm) and Wonka-like whimsical décor.
    • Ronnie Killen of Killen's Steakhouse.: James Nielsen : 29-95Ronnie Killen of Killen's Steakhouse.: James Nielsen : 29-95

    • CK’s Steakhouse is the much-anticipated joint production of Ronnie Killen (Killen’s Steakhouse) and Ricky Craig (Hubcap Grill). It is expected to open in the spring at 1127 W. 19th, next door to the Heights Hubcap Grill.
    • Alamo Drafthouse Cinemawill open its Vintage Park location on Feb. 14. What’s not to love about that Valentine’s gift? The Vintage Park cinema will feature seven theaters and Texas craft beers via a state-of-the-art tap system.
    • Expect a stampede of java lovers when Greenway Coffee’s David Buehrer finally opens his Blacksmith Coffee Shop at 1018 Westheimer. Housed in the former iconic Montrose gay bar Mary’s, Blacksmith is Buehrer’s collaboration with Anvil owner Bobby Heugel, as well as consulting chef Erin Smith, formerly of Plonk.
    • Addison-based Bone Daddy’s House of Smoke, where barbecue and beer are served by “Daddy’s Girls,” will open its first Houston-area location this month at 19901 Gulf Freeway near Baybrook Mall.
    • Del Frisco’s Grille, the casual cousin of DF’s Double Eagle Steak House, will open in West Ave this spring. The restaurant will serve comfort-food favorites such as meatloaf, “two-fisted” sandwiches and brunch on Sundays. The Grille will be located at 2800 Kirby in the space that formerly housed Ava Kitchen & Whisky Bar.
    • Volare Original Pizzeria will open sometime in the next few months at 2017 S. Shepherd in River Oaks. The restaurant will serve New York-style thin-crust pizzas, craft beer and boutique wines. The décor is promised to be “urban distressed, NYC-meets-Houston-Texas.” Interesting.
    • And we hate to even bring the topic up, but surelyMoon Tower Inn will re-open in 2013. The east-side wild-game-hot-dog specialists closed for renovations in October 2011 and then spent all of 2012 teasing its >loyal and not-so-patient patrons with construction photos and updates on Facebook.
On Jan. 1, a FB post offered this clue to the opening date:

well y'all, it's a new year and our NEW BUILDING PASSED INSPECTIONS YESTERDAY!!!! we're gonna blow off steam coon ass style, while we wait for the health dept. to clear us! see y'all in a week or so when we open!

Any idea what's holding up Ruggles at the 11th Street Cafe location, that was supposed to open last Summer?

    BBQ_GUY Wed, 01/02/2013 - 4:25pm

We also have a new BBQ joint opening on 1000 Telephone in a couple of weeks. It will be called Oak Leaf Smokehouse.

    .
How about a re-introduction of Krystal on the Southwest side?
(This time done right, locate it right off Hwy 59, not half way down FM1960!)

Probably not going to happen. No Krystals in Texas any longer, the only ones are in GA, TN, AL and MS. No loss, their burgers weren't anything to write home about. The FM1960 location was across from a Whataburger, Sonic and JackInTheBox that had been there for eons.

is brande still slated for a 2013 opening? i know they tore down the old ruggles a month or two ago.

    Syd Kearney Thu, 01/03/2013 - 11:44am

When it was announced in April, management predicted a fall 2013 opening. But those early predictions rarely stand. (See Moon Tower Inn.)

I hate Ruggles. I ate there many many times. And then they gave us the bum's rush so they could flip the table.

Anyone know when Texas de Brazil steakhouse will open?

    JoeyGtheMobster Thu, 01/03/2013 - 2:32pm

What we need is a "Dough." It is a San Antonio/Dallas neopolitan-style pizza place (similar to Pizaros, but more formal) that makes some of the best buratta you've ever had. Marscapone/black truffle filled burrata...Yum. I'll have to try these, but we need to be pushing for a Dough. If you make it to San Antonio, it is a must-try.

    And what about Seasons 52?

I have eaten once by the hands of Chris Leung, it was my pleasure to enjoy the best dessert of my life. Would be waiting for his outlet..
