Could it be a battle of the Belgians?

The Broken Spoke is having a grand opening redux beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, July 31.

So what's the deal for this established breakfast-and-burger emporium?

There's someone new in the kitchen. Catherine Duwez, formerly of Cafe Montrose, is calling the Broken Spoke her new home. And as expected, she's added her Belgian and French fare to the menu.

Cafe Montrose fans will be familiar with the new menu: cheese croquettes, Belgian-style onion soup and mussels with blue cheese and pommes frites. The restaurant also has added some Belgian beers to menu. (Wine fans are invited to BYOB.)

And, for those keeping track, Duwez's ex-husband, Andrew Klarman, recently opened a place with his sister, Jeannine Petas, on lower Westheimer. Jeannine's Bistro opened earlier this month with a menu that - surprise! - features a lot of Cafe Montrose standards.

I'm having trouble cramming mussels with blue cheese into the breakfast/burger genre. No matter, reinvention can be a very good thing. Looking forward to seeing how the evolution turns out.

Even if they're not together anymore, thank the Lord for the return of Belgian fare to the inner loop. I swear, I cried when Cafe Montrose closed.
