According to 29-95’s food truck guru Paul Galvani, more than 1,400 mobile kitchens work the streets of Houston.
The popularity of these dining alternatives has grown exponentially over the past three years. Every day we hear of some new food truck serving its first customers.
Three mobile kitchens were cited in Alison Cook’s Top 100 Houston Restaurants project including Melange Creperie at No. 12, Bernie’s Burger Bus and Good Dog Hot Dogs.
But today we want to know your favorite. Our contenders range from the old school (Tacos Tierra Caliente, which is known for its history of serving Alabama Icehouse’s customers) to the seasonal (Mams) to the relative newcomer (Waffle Bus).
You can also enter to win a $100 dollar gift card by writing a ‘review’ of your favorite food in in the comments below. We will choose the best comment review. For complete contest rules click here.
While you do have 3 candidates that I will drive out of my way for, where is H-Town StrEATS???
I'm not sure who exactly runs the truck, but the best one had the word SYSCO on it.
Where's h town Streats? The best, and been around longer than most of these others. Bad bad 29.95!
What type of food would they have? Wouldn't that make more sense?
If they had banannas, then the bananamobile.
If it's chicken, then the chicken cruiser.
And what about Lady Bird?!
OMG. They are at UH right now as we undergo rennovations on our University Center and they are sooo good. I only get the little burgers cause I can't eat much beef.
My TWO CONS with BBB:
1.PRICE: For a meal you end up paying around upwards of 12 bucks. and for college kids (and staff for that matter) that is expensive as HELL for a lunch. Atleast offer some discount prices as you are making a ton of money here with this bus being one of the only options available on campus.
2. MENU: It would be nice to get a chicken sandwhich at this place not just BEEF. I was so sad when standing out the 100 degree temps reading the menu to discover that none of these uniquely named sandwhiches contained chicken.
Why isn't H-Town Streats on there? They're the TOP truck on yelp. Conspiracy?!
I voted for Bernie's Burger Bus.
They've got the best burgers I've had in town, with a ton of variety in the menu. From simple burgers, to burgers with bacon and egg, to sliders, to the monster known as the Detention, Bernie's offers up a wide variety to burger fans. Add in their delicious homemade ketchup and their fantastic fries, which themselves come in a wide variety of exotic flavors, the special night menus with fantastic gourmet offerings, their great attitude, and the fantastic service - when you put in your order, you aren't going to be waiting long! - and you've got one of the best food trucks in town.
And all of that will be on the exam.
Best waffle in town.....
Seriously, why isn't H-Town Streats on here?
Love H-town's truck extreme taco Oh and they have balls!!
my top food trucks (5 of them) are not on this list!
Seriously?
I love all the trucks mentioned but H-Town Streats is so supreme. I mean, shorty macs and fried green tomato blts? Not to mention the beauty that is: magic mike?
No Eatsie Boys? No H-town StrEATS?
I agree....where is H-Town streats on this list? How can you have a best of the best list without them?!
Love H-Town Streats too, too bad they ain't listed here
Houston, please stop trying to be Austin.
I agree. I'm a transplant from LA and I don't get the Austin thing? True it's the capital, but many speak about in ways like it the only city, the city for all cities to be measured by. I just yawn... IT is a great city with great live music, but Houston is well, much better.
I hear this all the time when talking about restaurants. " This reminds me of Austin" what? who cares.
Austin got a huge amount of national buzz a few years back, everyone and their momma tried to move there, there are parts of Austin that look like you could be in San Francisco or Berkeley and not in Texas. Austin set a lot of trends that Houston is foolishly trying to copy, and IMO it's simply stupid.
Austin, stop trying to be Brooklyn
Austin, mind your own business.
Austin, (a) get your head out of your ass, (b) mind your own business.
This was tough. At Bernie's I had the Study Hall (PORK BELLY!) w bbq fries and I saw the world in colour again. But I have to go with Pi Pizza Truck they are bringing the THUNDER. Wild boar sausage w cherries soaked in port wine? The 420 slice? Fuggedaboutit.
Where is H-Town StEATS?? They are by far the best food truck in TEXAS! I would give $100 for a bite of anything Mr. Big Sexy cooks up!
Congratulations to the Food Trucks who made it on the list! Hopefully one day we'll see us there ;) www.flipnpatties.com
food.trucks.n.love.
Taco Tierra hands down not only best $1.50 taco in Houston but ANYWHERE I have had for that price....
No H-Town Streats???? :(
This is a write in vote for H-town Streats. Seriously. Tops in so many ways but not onthis list?!
I agree H-town StrEATs needs to be on this list.
H-town Streets need to be on here. Im also partial to Monster Pi. Best pizza slice I have ever eaten.
My vote is for Ladybird. Oh? There not on the list? Darn.
I vote for H-town streats! Why are they not on this list? They have such a diverse & tasty menu!
On the poll, I pick Good Dog Hot Dog because they have the best hot dogs, are super nice, & I crave their chips!
Write in vote for H-Town StrEATs. They're the top food truck in Houston on Yelp with the most votes, it's really a shame that you guys opted to keep them off the list. They have some of the best food in Houston, not only in the food truck market.
Please put htown streats on the poll so I can vote for my favorite food truck!
As the owner of the modular I would like for htown streats to have our place. The ate the best and deserve to be here. We are humbled to be added but for them not to be here is wrong. Htown streats needs to take our place.
29-95 Staff,
How many comments do y'all need before adding H-Town StrEATS to the list?
And perhaps it's time to explain how you select the candidates out of 1,400 food trucks in Houston (According to 29-95’s food truck guru Paul Galvani). Seems to me you should have started by asking your readers to comment and then compiled your list.
I could not agree with you more. For whatever dumb reasons? There is a bizarre love affair with " Austin " It's very obvious right here. Houston is a monster city with lots going on all the time, including lots of ( among other things ) good food trucks. But again in the eyes of some disillusioned people, it's just not the small city of Austin.
How do u know where the street trucks are going to be? is there a website that i can look at to see there locations?
they are all on twitter
Three words...COM...O...DEE. Would be interesting to see what "STAFF" put this list together and whether "STAFF" actually eat at these trucks...and more specifically how many others did "STAFF" eat to narrow
down to this list. Did they eat @SirenaSeafood? @HtownStrEATs? @EatsieBoys? @Tx_Ladybird? @StickItTruck? I digress...
UMMMMMMMM where is H-Town StrEATS???
I have never heard of some of these
I am a student living in Waco, Tx where good food is a myth like Santa and honest politicians. When I visit my mom and I (both foodies) always try to get in the car and drive all over Houston in search of these elusive food trucks. I have eaten at every truck up for vote and MANY more. My vote goes to the first truck we discovered at Inversion Coffee in Montrose. Bernie’s Burger Bus. I ordered the “homeroom” a delicious burger topped with a fried egg, after eating this burger I was forever changed. Everything they offer goes above and beyond expectations. Let’s set aside the truffle fries, bakery fresh buns, and the Black Angus Beef that is ground from three separate parts of the raised in Texas cow. They make their own ketchup, they sell bottles on the truck and you can find them at HEB. Go get some and see how much care goes into their food at the lowest levels. The “tipsy” onions are braised in Jack Daniels my drink of choice. All of the others belong on this list and are amazing in their own ways but Bernie’s has them beat. To make it fair restart this as “Best food truck in Houston that isn’t Bernie’s Burger Bus” They are friendly at all times even though it must be 150 degrees in that bus. The food is pricey but you pay for quality. The other trucks again are great and I have visited them multiple times and will continue in the future but Bernie’s stands alone. They are the Muhammad Ali of Houston food trucks.
I love Mam's House of Ice Snowballs. My sister introduced me to this wonderful food truck. She explained that these snow cones are not like regular snow cones, but I'll admit, I was skeptical because I didn't know what else could be done to a snow cone. Well, she was right; these were not just regular snow cones. On a hot day (Houston has one every day in summer!) these snow cones just hit the spot like nothing else! They are soft, cold, and full of flavor! And boy does Mam's have every flavor! Creole cream cheese, Dill pickle, but also some classics: pink and blue bubble gum, rainbow, and grape, just to name a few. Then you can top it off with gummy bears, condensed milk, or your choice of other delicious topping. When I think of a Houston summer I think of it beginning out in the heat with the art car parade, a Houston staple, enjoying the crowds and cars. Then I think of Miller outdoor theater, the zoo, and the down town fireworks for forth of July. Now I put Mam's on that list too. After a hot summer day in Houston I can't think of a better way to wind down and cool off than having a Mam's snow ball outside in the grass, listening to the sounds of kids, people and cars, enjoying the summer. To me, that's a Houston summer day is all about.
Custom Confection is my vote! Come on now how amazing is a cupcake with ice cream inside! My person favorite is the Root Beer Float frosty bite, a cupcake that taste like a root beer float and then it has ice cream in it ... OHHH SOO GOOD! And I can get a snack from then for $3 you can't beat that!
I am not sure how a snow ball truck, and a Crepe push cart made the list but Custom Confections, Coreanos, and Zillas does not
i voted for Bernies! sthill the best truck out there! but what about KurbsidEatz??
For those people asking where is the h-town street truck, and saying they are the best, have you gone and try one of these trucks food they offer?
My vote goes for Tacos Tierra Caliente, i am their customer since the taco stand started, like about 10 years ago.
Wow!!!!!!!! Finally Bernie’s Burger Bus wins. Iwas pretty damn sure about it. I read your blog now. I can't be able to be part of it but i liked Bernie’s Burger Bus a lot and it wins so am happy.Well if someone met through accident i would like to suggest that they should immediately contact Car Accident Lawyer for assistance. :)
