Youre gonna need a bigger knife.: Karen Warren : 29-95
Three steakhouses popped up in Alison Cook’s Top 100 Houston Restaurants. Highest on the list was Killen’s. Vic & Anthony’s was solid at No. 30 and Pappas Bros. slipped in at No. 99.
Now we’re asking Houstonians to be the judge.

Fleming's !!
Killen's is by far the best steakhouse in the Houston area. The service is excellent and the food is always absolutely wonderful. I have never eaten better steak anywhere. You must try the crab cake--simply delicious. The side dishes and deserts are always good.
Pappas is consistently very good.
Taste of Texas - I've never had a bad steak there. Ever, in probably 50 visits in 10 years, with groups as small as two and as large as 15.
Disagree, Went with my friend for her birthday, ordered a steak and lobster dinners, both were bad, way below par, but got a hefty bill for it. Left very dissapointed wowing never to return to this place...
Re: TOT, only once was I disappointed. I ordered a rare prime rib. They sent out an end piece, fully cooked. The manager was promptly at my side and the steak was replaced.
I agree... it has definitely slipped. Had a birthday party there for 85-year-young dad on a week night. 10 guests. Service was so-so, and 2 of the steaks were sub-par. Mentioned it to the waiter, who offered to replace steaks (of course, everyone else was finished eating). Replacements were slightly better, not great. Manager offered a coupon for 20% off next visit, within 30 days. Obviously, we went there for special occasion and not a regular Friday night meal. So, I guess we'll go somewhere else for Dad's next 85th birthday.
Never had GOOD steak at Tasteless Texas. A long wait for Saltgrass Steak.
I have a question for the readers. Are the best steaks at home on the grill or at a restaurant bone-in, or without the bone?
Thanks.
....at a restaurant, NY Strip, please; no bones about it! I can never get my steak right at home. :(
At home, at home, at home and tons and tons cheaper.
Mine at home top any steakhouse or restaurant in the area that I've tried. Practice (and a good, foil-covered rest) makes perfect.
As for bone in/out, I've found bone-in can mess with the touch test for done-ness.
No poll showing.
Hey, Mary, I'm not sure what brower you're using. It does seem to have some type of display issues with Chrome right now, but it was working earlier this a.m. It displays fine in IE and Firefox. Meanwhile we're exploring the issue.
Thanks, the Chrome is back working now.
Best steak I ever had in Houston was at Da Marco's. Second best was at Tony's.
Pretenders include way over-rated chain restaurants Fleming's and Vic and Anthony's.
I hate to admit it, but the best steak I ever had was at the dining hall on A&M's campus in 2001. They had filet mingon one day that semester that was the most tender and tasteful dish I've ever eaten. Don't know how it happened, but I swear that a shipment to Taste of Texas was inadvertantly routed there. I ate 4 that day. Perry's comes close and Taste of Texas and Christopher's probably matched it, but nothing has ever beaten it.
My personal steak dining experience was with The Taste of Texas. I've had good results at others, but TOT always makes me happy.
Perry's
My house!
What time?
Taste of Texas
I don't see a poll either. If I did, I'd vote for Taste of Texas. Fantastic steaks (especially the bone-in ribeye), a great salad/bread bar, and when things are busy and you aren't seated immediately, a great waiting area with free popcorn and sodas. What's not to love?
No poll shown; shoud all entries be written in?
III Forks. Classic.
TASTE OF TEXAS is not as stuffy as other steakhouses but still provides me with an excellent cut of meat cooked to perfection. It's my first choice for steak in Houston.
The Palm, the Palm, the Palm!!!!!!!!!!! Does that count as at least 3 votes? I've never had a bad steak, there, NEVER...before that, it was the Old San Francisco Steakhouse before it was bought out and torn down...I've had Ruth's Chris and Perry's as well, and I still come back to the Palm...
...although a bit different and offering more variety, Fogo De Chao, and Tradicao on SW Fwy are excellent as well...
When I was little, I thought the best job in the world would be to be the lady on the ceiling swing at Old San Francisco Steakhouse.
me too!
1. Steakountry Buffet
2. Logan's Roadhouse
3. Luby's
Killen's? Never heard of it. Strange that I've lived here all my life, frequent a majority of those places yet never heard of the one acquiring a 66% of the votes. Sounds like fraudulent voting to me.
It's getting a lot of votes because of reviews like this http://pix.29-95.com/2012/top-100/alison-cooks-top-100-no-14-killlens/ and this http://www.chron.com/entertainment/article/Killen-s-Steakhouse-1534824.php
No... It's getting the votes because it's a great steakhouse. If people would stop mindlessly going to Taste of Texas and venture out of the way every once in a while they will find out.
But free sodas!
I wondered the same thing - never heard of Killens. Looked it up and it's in Pearland, not Houston.
I'm sure this poll means Houston and the surrounding areas. Including suburbs like Sugarland, Katy, and Pearland.
We're very inclusive and you'd be surprise at some of the restaurants in the 'burbs. There's some great stuff out there, you've just got to be welling to explore.
And we should add that Ronnie Killen is looking to open a restaurant is Houston proper.
It's also worth adding that the older center of Pearland is not exactly the dark side of the moon. Killen's is 13 miles from my house on the near East End via Telephone Rd/35. It's further for me to drive out to Memorial.
Killen's is by far the best and I've been to every so called "great" steakhouse in Houston. Chef Killen was on the short list to be Executive Chef for the White House in 2005, his food is THAT good. It's our little secret here in Pearland. If steak is not your thing, save your money, and go to some of the other places on the list, they are good, and you will enjoy your meal. If you are a real steak eater, go to Killen's. Period.
Killen's is in PEARLAND, and it ROCKS! You need to go try it before you get an attitude! In fact, The Houston Chronicle has featured Killen's MANY, MANY times (with great reviews). I think you just don't get around much NOR do you read The Cronicle!
Mastro's Steakhouse in Beverly Hills. Sorry not in Houston. But Pappas Bros is consistent. Never been to Killen's. Is it worth the drive? Aren't they opening one inside the Loop?
I had to chuckle as Mastros in Scottsdale used to my guilty pleasure not just for the food! It was the first place I ever had a Citrus Vodka Martini served on dry ice and the drink literally was "smoking" when served. It was the coldest cockatail(s) I have ever had!
I voted Taste of Texas. But this poll is a little like asking who's the prettiest woman? (Of course the answer is: Whatever the woman's name who is bringing me a Taste of Texas steak :D )
Taste of Texas is fine if you're looking for choice cut steaks (then again, you can get the same at Saltgrass or Outback). But, for real steaks (I'm talking prime dry aged or wet aged), you can't beat Killens. C'mon people. Take the drive to Pearland and you won't be disappointed.
Sorry, but Chili's makes the best absolutely melt-in-your-mouth Ribeye
Del Frisco’s has got to be hands down the best steakhouse restaurant in Houston…Not only for their food, but for their superb quality of service and attention to detail. My husband and I went there for our anniversary earlier this year. The second we walked in the door, they greeted us both by our first names and told us “Happy Anniversary”. The food was amazing, and the steaks were cooked perfectly. They have a signature VIP Martini that is awesome! The manager stopped by and wished us a happy anniversary as well. We had White Chocolate Bread Pudding for dessert. It was absolutely great. I must say that they spared no expense with the hospitality. It was a truly amazing experience altogether.
Ronnie Killen's is a little slice of heaven. Every time I eat steak somewhere else, it's always measured against Killen's and Killen's always wins!
Love Pappas Steakhouse-everything from the appetizers to the dessert
I have tried the majority of these steakhouses and Vic & Anthony's always seems to rise above the rest. The atmosphere alone is reason enough to dine there, but the food and the service put this steakhouse into it's own stratosphere. Their bone-in ribeye with a nice bottle of Cabernet is heaven on earth for me.
PAPPAS...
Ya ever sit in a restaurant and feel like your home,
thats exactly how I feel everytime I eat there! If you can find a better melt in ya mouth steak done any better than the way they do it @PAPPAS I'd be surprized...
So kick off your boots and enjoy!!!
For the dollar, steak and shrimp night at Golden Corral wins hands down.
Killen's is the best, hands down. I have been there many times and service is consistently superior to other restaurants and the food is excellent. I always get the dry aged beef because it does have a different flavor that I love. It is worth the drive to Pearland for you city folks. Try it once and you will be comparing all steaks to Killen's. I promise!!
Been having problems opening files on here for over a month. Problem continues.
Frank's Chop House!
I am still and always will be a fan and promoter of Vic and Anthony's. The aesthetic of the restaurant screams old timey steakhouse down to the piano man in the bar. It's makes it fun to either have a pre- or post-dinner drink in the bar. I love coming here for their wonderfully flavored and perfectly cooked steaks. They always have you cut through your steak to ensure it's to your liking. We love getting dressed up and feeling like an adult night out. Surprisingly enough their non-steak items are also quite delicious (i.e. lobster bisque and crab cake). Yum - my mouth just watered. Can't wait to have another!
Lynn's steakhouse all day everyday. If you have some family in town and you want to blow them away with superb service and out of this world cuts, GO TO LYNN'S!!!!! Taste of Texas???!! Seriously? I liked that place when my elementary took us in 5th grade. Eddie V's is really good too and cheaper than Brenner's or Lynn's. Lynn's is on a tier of it's own. You will feel like royalty.
As with the previous poll, I voted for the worst. If you don't know any better than Taste of Texas, I don't want you sitting next to me at the real best steakhouse in town.
If you know better than TOT, then who is it ? Too many people's opinions of "chic" places come from reading the restaurant reviews coming from the airline magazine available next to their seat. Places like Mortons and the Palm seem to get lots of print. But as for me, I'll stick with local places that have much more at steak.
Sorry, but the best place in town has nothing to do with being "chic." Still, I hope you enjoy your steak & flipflops.
Killen's steakhouse in Pearland is the pearl in the middle of the oyster. Off the beaten path, and not fancy on the outside but it rivals any Houston steakshouse with its upscale interior, excellent service and superb food. You will find it's well worth the drive once you get there.
My husband and friends have been dining there for special occasions or when entertaining guests long before Chef Ronnie lost all the weight. The man is a food guru!
My favorite is the Wagyu ribeye (with a side of corn risotto). Oh so tender!....it goes down like melted butter!! And save room for the appetizers and desserts. The fried asparagus with lump crab is divine and there are NO bad choices for dessert. We usually get dessert to go because we are too stuffed after our sumptuous meal. Satisfaction guaranteed
Yet another pick the best of what we what you to. At least this list has the better restaurants on it than the last 3 or 4, "polls."
Capital Grille is our favorite
My vote is for Pappas but only if seated in the cigar room. Super quiet and great ambience. Dark enough to slip off your loafers and loosen your belt. Food and service perfect and wine not outrageous if you can do a little research.
Killens is the best, their crab cakes are amazing & steaks are obviously incredible. Also worth trying is the carrot cake- so good! Worth the drive.
Taste of Texas! We drive across town to eat there. We receive the newsletter. We feel like we are a part of the family. My father-in-law (rip), loved this place. When he visited from Indiana, it was the first place he wanted to go. We even enjoy the great selections on the salad bar and dont mind fetching for ourselves. Sure the others are all great. But they dont have the love that comes with Taste of Texas.
Where is Ruth Chris Steakhouse on this list??? I guess most who vote here can't afford the best steaks in town!!!!!
