A relic of Houston’s past goes on the auction block this week.
The iconic neon sign that welcomed visitors to Felix’s Mexican Restaurant for more than 50 years is being sold on eBay.
Executive Chef Tyson Cole, who opened Uchi Houston in the Westheimer space that housed Felix’s, has targeted all the proceeds from the auction to the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) to honor Felix’s late owner Felix Tijerina. Tijerina served four terms as president of LULAC.
"Our Uchi family is proud to offer this iconic sign up to benefit Mr. Tijerina's favorite charity, LULAC, an organization he led, supported and believed in for so many years," Cole said.
The auction, which went live Monday, will continue through Dec. 2.
The porcelain sign is being auctioned it three parts, each with a starting bid of $1,500.

I loved that place so very much. I remember my favorite waiter Frank. He was always so attentive. Mrs. Tijerina would throw sales people out of the restaurant. I miss the food and the atmosphere there.
Maybe it will hang in El Real with the other Tex-Mex memorabilia.
Let's hope not. El Real is horrible and is not worthy of hosting any physical part of Felix.
Many happy times spent under taht sign.
They should have auctioned off the Holder coackroach sign
I ate at Felix when I moved here in 1979, it wasn't good and then a few years later I went for a B'day party and wasn't good that time. Houstonians must have agreed with me since neither time it was busy.
The plate stayed under the boiler until the beans had completely chard creating it's own wall around them. The rice was bland and the meat was salty.
I, for one, wondered what happened to the sign after it was taken down. Thanks for the update.
I was not impressed at all. Just like the Texas Longhorns................over rated!
Tyson C- Leave the darn sign and learn how to make that god forsaken cheese gel that we miss so much.
It was a crappy restaurant. There's lot of real mexican food in Houston that is far better than the crap served at Felix's. LULAC is a racist organization. they can explain why so many illegal aliens work in mexican restaurants and mow lawns.
Felix's was good back in the Nixon administration (and no, I'm not THAT old - I'm referring back to my father's memories of the place).
Actually, back in the 1970s, there were six Felix restaurants all over town. It gradually got upstaged by an East Houston restaurant which later began its own brand of chains. Perhaps you've heard of it - it was called Ninfa's.
As for LULAC, I think you're confusing it with La Raza ("The Race"). Any group that calls itself The Race is most definitely racist. Ole!
