Market to host green festival and other Houston restaurant news

    Georgia's Farm to Market is hosting a day of education, good food and live music Saturday, June 18.
    The first Sustainable Living Fest will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and will focus on the green lifestyle, including energy, organic farming, recycling and holistic health. In addition to exhibitors, there will be giveaways, children’s activities and an e-drive for those who want to recycle obsolete electronics.
    The Sideshow Tramps are among the entertainers scheduled to appear. Also making the scene, food trucks Snowdog Ice Cream, Green Seed Vegan and Oh My Pocket Pies.

    BRUNCH & MARKET AT FARRAGO
    Starting Saturday Farrago will be opening an hour earlier — 9:30 a.m. — for brunch and the world cuisine restaurant will offer a small farmer’s market in its back courtyard. Expect to find fresh okra, mangos, broccoli, onions, tomatoes and seedless watermelon.

    NOW OPEN: WOOD FIRED PIZZA COMPANY
    Locally owned and operated Wood Fired Pizza Company has opened a second location in the Champions/Spring area. It’s open daily. You gotta try Kourtney’s Beef & Basil pizza with seasoned beef, mushrooms, sweet red onions, fire-roasted peppers and the house sauce.     Caffe Cafe has opened downtown. Open seven days a week, the cafe serves fresh baked goods, including muffins and scones for breakfast, along with Italian coffee drinks.     EPICUREAN EXPRESS
    Not far away, Epicurean Express, a gourmet market and deli, has opened on the eastern edge of downtown. In addition to pantry staples, the market offers Boar’s Head meats, artisan breads, cheeses and wine and beer. The market will soon offer a selection of prepared foods, as well as a coffee bar.

    SORELLE ITALIAN DELI
    Sorelle Italian Deli has opened in Missouri City. The deli offers a variety of salads and sandwiches, all made with local produce. Owner Bennie Gonzalez boasts his Meatball Parmigiana is topped with the “best little meatballs in Texas.” The deli is closed on Sundays.

    JOE’S CRAB SHACK
    Joe's Crab Shack reopened on Galveston’s Pier 19 earlier this week. The bayfront restaurant has been closed since Hurricane Ike swept across the island in September of 2008. Among the additions to the reconstructed family-oriented seafood restaurant is a large outdoor deck with a fire pit.

    Comfort food queen Elouise Adams Jones of Ouisie's Table is opening a new restaurant in River Oaks in September. The Bird & The Bear: Ouisie’s American Bistro will open at 2810 Westheimer in a space now occupied by Tony Mandola's Gulf Coast Kitchen, which soon will be moving to new digs on Waugh.

    TEXAS WINES GET A PUSH
    Go Texan or go thirsty!
    So says the Texas Department of Agriculture in a new campaign to promote the state’s $1.7 billion wine industry. It’s urging Texans to visit restaurants that serve Texas wines and to encourage those neighborhood restaurants that don’t carry Lone Star vintages to do so.

    A quick check of the list shows that Carmelo's, Haven, Rio Ranch, the Backyard Grill, the Burger Shack/strong> and Saltgrass Steak House are among the Houston restaurants offering Texas wines.

    DINNER DEAL AT DEL FRISCO’S
    Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steak House is offering a summer special called the Power Couple. It’s a three course dinner for two for $99 (plus tax and tip). A sample meal: Caesar salad, 8-ounce filet mignon and crabcake with Chateau Potatoes, and, for dessert, chocolate mousse. The deal is good through Sept. 5.
