We’re kinda loving Hollister on Washington, the new restaurant from Hollister Grill’s Chuck Pritchett. Just a few days into service, the kitchen — led by former Cafe Rabelais sous chef Jason Kerr — is hitting on all cylinders.
The menu is filled with Gulf Coast classics such as fried green tomatoes and an oyster po’boy, as well as some surprises like short rib pozole and the red-bean-and-rice burger. Our new favorite dish is the short-rib crostini topped with a sunny-side-up egg.
It’s BYOB (corkage is $10 per table) until the grill gets its liquor license.

Firkin & Phoenix makeover
Here is a toast to change, particularly at Firkin & Phoenix, the 6-year-old pub that straddles Montrose and River Oaks. Gone are the claustrophobia-inducing cabinets over the bar.

Now open: La Madeleine
La Madeleine Country French Cafe has opened its 15th Houston-area store at 1560 Eldridge Parkway. Open daily, the restaurant marks a new look for the Dallas-born chain. Think a lighter color palette and updated artwork.
La Madeleine is marking its 30th anniversary this year by giving away a trip to Paris. The contest is looking for the best original recipe that includes as an ingredient the cafe’s popular tomato basil soup.
