Three Houston restaurants – Oxheart, Uchi and Underbelly – have made the list of the Top 50 new restaurants in the country by Bon Appetit. Today the magazine released the long list on bonappetit.com. In its upcoming annual Restaurant Issue, BA will announce the Top 10 from the list (it also will be online Aug. 14).
Here’s what the magazine said about the Houston restaurants it considers among the top new dining spots in the nation:
Oxheart (1302 Nance): “Ignore the name. Justin Yu and Karen Man's spectacular sliver of a restaurant celebrates Gulf Coast produce and seafood. Choose from one of three value-driven tasting menus and be glad you're in Texas' greatest food city.”
Justin Yu plates a dish at Oxheart.: Karen Warren : 29-95
Uchi (904 Westheimer): “Yes, they serve serious sushi in chef Tyson Cole's third temple to all things fish, but unlike at other spots of its caliber, you can't hear a pin drop—you're in Texas, after all.”
Exterior Uchi Houston.
Underbelly (1100 Westheimer): “Chef Chris Shepherd's dream restaurant pays homage to the incredible diversity of Houston's dining scene with a freewheeling menu filled with the flavors of Korea, Vietnam, and, yes, the Gulf Coast.”
Chris Shepherd of Underbelly.
"Be glad you're in Texas' greatest food city"
recognition. finally.
Well, we all knew it was true. But Austintude and related hype interfered.
What's with all the uncomfortable chairs?
No comfort food restaurants serving chipped beef on toast made the list?
The Bon Appetit list doesn't include even one steakhouse. Not one. Anywhere. Shocking.
Three excellent, deserving restaurants!!! And three of the best to open in Houston since Feast and Reef!!! Inner loop dining keeps getting better and better!
Cue the hick caterwauling about how Oxheart is 'only rabbit food' and 'aint got no steak'.
Cue the racist idiotic hate towards anyone who believes good meat should be recognized. What a tool.
What happened to Tony's? Evidently the Cobb Salad is full of cobwebs.
This is a list of best NEW restaurants. Tony's isn't new, so wasn't even a candidate for consideration.
Getting tired of the Houston resturant scene, then get in your car and drive 4 1/4 hrs up IH 45 to Big D. Dine at the cities many resturants. steak House,Korean, Vietnamase, Thi, you name it we got it.
Keep yourself and your comments in litte d (d=DUMP). Your slop houses don't hold a candle to what we have in Houston.
So yesterday was driving around on my lunch hour (because if I had stayed in my office I would have killed that witch across the hall) and found several restaurants I've read about recently on the Houston Restaurant Weeks list, including Uchi and Underbelly. Living so far out in the burbs sometimes the thought of grabbing the hubby and driving back in is daunting, but now that I know where they are, it's not so daunting.
Wonderful list! So glad to see these restaurants get national attention. It is a great time to be a Houstonian- even if it's tough on the old waistline.
Checking the City of Houston restaurant report, Uchi was tagged for a total of 10 health code violations.....2.5 times the average.

No real food served at any of them, only overpriced, elitiest - uppie food. Most will be out of business within 3-5 years.
Always baffled by the ignorance of the majority of Internet commenters. First off, congrats to the restaurants on the list. Second, we have more than enough options in Houston to now have to drive up to Dallas. Why drive north for a step down in food options?
