Chef/owner Ronnie Killen’s steakhouse earned nearly
40 percent of the votes in the poll. The closest competitor in polling was Tilman Fertitta’s downtown steak palace, Vic & Anthony's with 32 percent of the votes. Pappas Bros. Steakhouse was a distant third with 9 percent of the vote.

Earlier this year, Killen’s ranked No. 14 and was the top-rated steakhouse in Cook’s Top 100 Houston Restaurants project.

Chef Killen is in big demand these days. He’ll be cooking a dinner called the Art of Smoke at the prestigious James Beard House in New York City on Sept. 29, orchestrating at $500-a-seat benefit for Recipe of Success on Sept. 27 and presenting cooking demonstrations Sept. 15-16 at the Metropolitan Cooking Show at Reliant Center.

The winner of this week’s $100 gift card is Ignatz, who left a review of Pappas Bros:

“Ya ever sit in a restaurant and feel like your home? That’s exactly how I feel every time I eat there. If you can find a better melt-in-ya-mouth steak done any better than the way they do it at Pappas, I’d be surprised. So kick off your boots and enjoy!”

Completely agree- I was skeptical when a friend brought me to Killens but I was completely blown away.

Killeens is very good - the crab cake is exceptional, but my favorite steak house is Del Frisco's Double Eagle in the Galleria... YUM!

    Anonymous Wed, 08/29/2012 - 9:21pm

i agree with this person.....Del Frisco's is my favorite, followed by Flemings in the Woodlands

Either you misspelled the review or you awarded a review to someone with bad grammar. Either way - sloppy.

    AllYourBaseNowBelongToUs Wed, 08/29/2012 - 10:17am

In the top picture, that looks just like the Wagyu tomahawk ribeye that I cooked last week. It was quite yummy.

BTW, does everybody else experience an issue where this site NEVER accepts the CAPTCHA the first time?

    Pistolpete Wed, 08/29/2012 - 11:18am

Yes, plus opening links problems. Have been complaining for months.

    THELAFFR Wed, 08/29/2012 - 12:34pm

It has something to do with your "cookies". You either have to enable or disable, I can't remember which, but it worked for me. And WHY do we need to complete a "CAPTCHA" anyways? What ever happened to the good old SEND function?!!!!! :(

    Pistolpete Wed, 08/29/2012 - 1:14pm

    Cookies??? You lost me.

    THELAFFR Thu, 08/30/2012 - 8:53am

LOL, it's a function under the Tools button on your computer. Ask someone who knows about computers! Eek!!!

    TheRealRick Wed, 08/29/2012 - 9:56pm

    Captcha is soooooooooooooooooooo ghetto.

Can't wait until the location in the Heights is finished.

ruth's chris used to be my favorite until one night a few weeks ago i had dinner there. because of the two guys sitting next to us having dinner. i don't blame them for my not going anymore, but the management. you see they basically looked like gangbangers. literally, one guy had his pants down below his but, both were wearing muscle t-shirts and the prison color tatoos covered both arms (plus they ate like pigs). it felt as though i was on the wrong side of town. i wonder how the mature ladies, with their gold rolexes and diamonds felt, i bet they won't be back either.

    AntonChigurh Wed, 08/29/2012 - 3:28pm

Your grammar, spelling and syntax make you very hard to believe.

    WyCowboy Wed, 08/29/2012 - 2:57pm

I haven't been to Killens but I have been to most of the other ones on the list and frankly I couldn't really choose one over the others for the food. Atmosphere wise, I'd give the nod to Flemming's... but not by much

    Dude Wed, 08/29/2012 - 3:02pm

I totally disagree with this survey. I went to Killens about two weeks ago with a friend. The steak was decent but Ive had much better. My friend had the bread pudding and, in her words, "wasnt impressed". The food was ok at best, but wasn't worth the price I paid. Also, is Killen in the back cooking every night? If so, I didnt see him grilling/cooking my steak the night we were in there.
This is the second time Ive eaten at Killens, and both times I was not impressed. Im not saying its bad, but its not worth a #1 ranking in the Houston area. Id rate it as "average". Ive had steak from all over the city, state, and country, and this place is average.

    Ugly Jerry Wed, 08/29/2012 - 3:46pm

A well deserved rating for one of the best restaurants in the Houston area. I live in Pearland and Killen's is just down the road and is always the perfect dinner spot. I've been to the most of the top steakhouses in Houston and Killen's has never ceased to impress. When you do decide to go be sure to get the Creme Brulee Bread Pudding for dessert.....

Killens is good. But if you want to try another good addition to that area (Pearland/Alvin), you should try The Barbed Rose (in Alvin). Good food and good service. Kind of like Killens in the sense that when you drive up to the place, you would not assume it is a high dollar fine dining kind of place. They also have an outdoor sister place is a burger joint that is pet friendly.

    Pistolpete Wed, 08/29/2012 - 6:02pm

Thought they closed a few weeks ago?

    disappointed Wed, 08/29/2012 - 6:53pm

The Barbed Rose is no more...its a weird tex-mex tragedy in the place where Barbed Rose used to be. If that weren't true, I'd agree with you...we used to love that place

    Crowner Wed, 08/29/2012 - 4:12pm

Dude looks straight PISSED off at how good his meat is. Beat that Tilman.

    Ray Wed, 08/29/2012 - 5:35pm

We ate there once a year or so ago. Was it good? Yes, but frankly i have bought prime steaks and cooked them at home on my grill and mine was just as good. Also, while the supposedly have a dress code, it seems not to be enforced as while we were eating some people came in wearing shorts and tshirts and sandles and they were seated.

    Thundergod43 Wed, 08/29/2012 - 6:57pm

I live in Alvin and The Barbed Rose closed in July and reopened as the Coastal Grill. The same person owns it and the same chef runs it, but they serve food from all over the gulf coast. It's more of a mainstream restaurant now with average prices, but I heard that the portions were very small for what you do pay.

    Keith Wed, 08/29/2012 - 7:03pm

The Barbed Rose closed back in July.

    NastyDog Wed, 08/29/2012 - 9:17pm

That would be Pearland's Best Steak, not in Houston, disqualified...

    Sheryl Mexic Wed, 08/29/2012 - 10:48pm

So who would you suggest they be up against in Pearland?

While Killen is present and personally involved in each meal, the Pappas bros are at Luby's trying to keep the food hot.

    Fred Sun, 09/02/2012 - 11:07pm

I would not eat steaks anywhere but at home. Too expensive. Now with price of meat in grocery stores and meat markets, eating out is about as cheap. lol

well at least Killen's got to be on the web site and in the paper, when we won the best burger of houston all we got was a 15 min blurp on their website before the huge shit storm started, and everything dissappeared, wasn't even in the paper, but we still won, thanks yall who voted
